i used to give a friend a lift to work, he would come to my house and i would take him to work and then i would drive home and he would walk from my house home.
as i was doing this journey anyway i didnt charge him and i only had one condition, he turn up on time as if he was not on time then i would leave him and go to work without him, there were a few occassions this did happen.
he never paid me but often would buy me lunch or coffee as a gesture of thankyou.
now if i went to his house and picked him up then i would want paying as i would be like a taxi.

As a child I used to get a lift to school from a friend who's Mum would drive him to school and pass the bus stop I would be waiting at. If I was there and they stopped, I would buy him a choccy bar with my bus fare (his kind mum got no more than a Thankyou). He soon worked out that he should ring me when he left home, so that I would be at the bus stop and he'd get his chocolate!!I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. It's a little like going to a restaurant, when everyone says, "We'll split the bill equally at the end, regardles of what we all have!". It always gets messy when one person says, "I didn't have..." or, "But he had..." and doesn't want to pay their full share. They need to live a little and worry less!
But that person DOES want to pay their full share, what they don't want to pay is for everyone elses.0 -

I disagree. Perhaps I should have used the term "their FAIR share" (ie, the total amount, divided by the number of diners) at the beginning. If they're not happy with the arrangement, don't agree to it beforehand.
As Inspector Monkfish so eloquently put it, "Blokes just divvy it up and pay more than they actually need to..."

My car costs me about 12p/mile to fill up - so I'd charge 6p per mile (so around a fiver a day). I wouldn't charge anything for wear and tear etc as I would be going anyway. If I were to wait around til when K wanted to leave, I'd charge an extra few quid a day though, at least.0

I'd suggest K buys his/her own car... then they could carpool - each drives on alternate weeks. Each saves half the wear and tear on the car, and fuel costs are halved. K is presumably an adult who could compute the distance between home and work - did K just assume M would be happy to provide transport daily? Bit cheeky. What contingency plans does K have if M is off work on sick leave etc?
I would HATE to be tied to giving someone a lift 80 miles a day every day - it would do my head in. I bought my car to get me to where I want to go, not to be a taxi driver. As for hanging around waiting for someone - forget it, never gonna happen.
yes, i'm particularly grumpy and tired this evening - good job no-one was depending on me for a lift home after work, they'd by sorry now!I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

How is it "their fair share"???
The people NOT paying "their fair share" are those that had the more expensive things & want to pay the same as those that picked cheaper things.0 -
In response to the question where did I live it is in the Manchester area.
As for the sum of 50p it was suggested as an inital goodwill gesture. If I wanted to make a profit then I would have been far more mercenary. As it was it got very silly and as I said the passengers took liberties. I am sure at the time there was laods od stories in the media about sharing cars to cover costs. I did not see it as a cost just a helpful thing to do.
As for the comments from the poster that has such a hard time at the bus stop as I said to you at the time keep your papers off my vinal as they mark. The price of a curly whirly was more that resonable and you can keep your LOOK IN and but your self a proper form of transport, A Grifter bike would be just right.
Actually thought your post was very funny.
You could still walk though.
Even in the rain.
And I wont wave at you.0 -

Really!! Worst paid graduate profession upon leaving university - the average of £30,000 is a con by our government - I had to teach for nearly 8 years before I earnt £28,000 and that meant taking on extra responsibilities for extra money.'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632
