K would ideally like to move but as the contract is until end of the school year, the costs of moving etc are just as prohibtive I assume. So - the consensus is - he is being fairly charged. I like getmore4less' point, M is doing all the driving and for 2 hours a day is a lot (however one could also argue why does M chose to live so far away as well and if he has to make the journey anyway, why not help out a colleague?)

    Based on the limited info(speculative)

Because K looks like they took the only job going, will move on and are just after a cheap lift.

Is age a factor, is K young, M a bit older more settled?

After reading through this thread i have realised how lucky i am to have some of the friends i do. Most of you might not realise but friends actually do things for each other and here is the best bit - They dont charge for it.

A perfect example is my friend who fits carpets in hotels, i asked him to fit a few of my carpets and brace yourselves - he didn't want anything for doing it. Actually i got the beers in whilst he did it. But it does seem that for some of you on here friends helping each other out is unheard of.

I mean i appreciate the MSE behind it but come on. Its bordering on profiteering off a friendship and some of you should be ashamed to call yourselves friends.

Of course friends do stuff for nothing and help out.

Most will help out a mate or family whatever way they can when they can fit it in

This was so different to a "mates rates" situation from the start.
  • I'm sure you can appreciate the need to keep things quite vague because these are real people in real circumstances. Is M taking advantage of K by charging £200 a month or not? K didn't take the only job going and will only move on because he is replacing an absent member of staff (its a temporary contract) and besides, K enjoys working where he does. K is younger than M and not as settled but I can't see how this affects the debate. K can drive but cannot afford a car so is reliant on public transport - as quite a few have stated - real friends wouldn't charge so why should M profit?

Because she is just like most other posters on this thread and a money grabbing poor excuse of a friend.

To Piper and Sturll - in reality it's never that easy and if you want to continue this on my other thread about teacher training - you're very welcome. I wish what you say could be true, then teachers would be labelled as shurkers but we're not. You can't have an off-day, do not much in the morning and then think about stuff in the afternoon - it has to be right, it has to be perfect and it has to be a good standard.

Imagine if Jonathan Ross had to plan his whole radio show and the Friday Night show all by himself, five times every day. Would he alone produce the quality he does? No - he has researchers, production staff, make-up artists, producers, assistants etc and is paid well over the average (IMHO) for a TV presenter - but no-one tell's him he only works for 9 months of the year and for 6.5 hours a day. My point is, as teachers, we do produce, resource, direct, manage, lead, care, encourage, motivate, enthuse and whatever else is needed to a highly critical audience who at their teenage years do not want to do anything let alone being at school. Now is that an easy option for a career?

Excuse me , Sir! Don't you mean shirkers?

I totally agree, I give my friends lifts all the time and wouldn't expect to be paid for it! But I got the impression this was less of a friends situation and more of a 2 colleagues who happen to live near each other sharing transport costs, which IMO is different.

I think if we were talking shorter journeys, it wouldn't be so much of an issue and a token payment/ get in the drinks/ lunch now and again would suffice, but in this instance I do think M is putting themselves out quite a bit. Unless its a real good mate, I wouldn't particularly want to spend 2 hours a day in a car with an acquaintance making small talk maybe I'm just a grump!
  • Really!! Worst paid graduate profession upon leaving university - the average of £30,000 is a con by our government - I had to teach for nearly 8 years before I earnt £28,000 and that meant taking on extra responsibilities for extra money.

    I knew you'd bite...:rotfl:

  • K's GF works in town B...K was doing supply before offered post in town S - hence the reason for the commute.

    Are you K or M ?

    or Ks GF.

    £10 is a reasonable charge for 80miles

I would have looked at moving closer to work to cut costs

There is surely a difference between helping a friend out, i would happily go out of my way 80 miles a day to help a friend for a week or so, but to do it full time, I would charge!
