How much should a colleague pay to have a car share journey to work?

I can't believe this is still going.
At the end of the day the driver can charge whatever they want. They are the one with the car and offering the service to the passenger. It is easy for other people to say 'I'd do this or that' when they know they don't have to! I also don't think just because the car is going that way anyway they can expect a lift.
On the other hand, if the passenger doesn't like it then all they need to say is 'thanks, but no thanks' and get public transport. I would have thought that the two of them talking together would be the best bet, and that MB chatter and staffroom gossip/!!!!!ing isn't the beast way to get somebody to change their mind. In a reasonable discussion though, I'd be surprised if somebody wouldn't rather get £100-150pw rather than nothing!0 -

I drive 60 miles round trip to work every day. I have given people the occasional lift and wouldn't charge for that as I'm doing them a favour.
However someone did want to make it a regular thing and no matter how much they offered to pay, there is no way I would do it on a regular basis. I like to leave home and drive straight to work, not take a detour to pick someone up and I like my own company in the morning, not struggling to make small talk so for me it would be a non-starter.0 -

I love the fact there's a calculator for this!
Could someone do the maths for me on this?
Now I have a company car but don't get company petrol. So the calculator is useless.
A colleague asked me this morning to pick them up from the local MOT garage.
It was about 1/2 mile each way and I waited for about 2 minutes (the time is a guess, but was nearly all of "Gina G - Just a little bit") with my engine running.
He never offered me anything, except to make the brews when we got back. I've now started to feel a little aggrieved. Should I have asked him for a fun sized mars bar while I was at it?0 -

wouldn't want to be in your shoes
at the end of the day, i suppose it all depends where you ask him to put that fun size mars bar i guessPlease take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

So to summarise and the boat is still out on this issue - the current trend is that the driver can charge what they like regardless of who the passenger is, if the payment is in kind, we can deposit the payment(s) anywhere we wish so as long as the passenger isn't annoying and allows us to 'be ourselves'.
Also, the general rule of thumb for K is stop moaning and pay up or get the train (or bike and if K has enough energy, have an illicit affair with the drama teacher, slip on some comfy shoes, smoke a pipe and sit and spout a few facts...) - before you quote IM - I know your response to this - Yep
So much for human kindness then! And this is supposed to be money saving expert.com and for K who could save some money (K isn't looking for a freebie here, let us not forget that) and this is all the advice we can give him.'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632

In a nutshell in fact why ask in the first place when you know the answerWhat baffles me is this thread is now over 8 pages old where silly questions of no importance like nation debt or small countries going bust last a mere two pages at best.
Who has a good recipe for yorkshire pud anyone:cool::cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -

I suppose that's what a forum is for - to pose a question and let people debate an issue. I posed a dilemma (wanting to see what other people thought - for and against the questions) and have led the debate.
For the pudding recipe try the other forum boards about home DIY perhaps or even look up a Gordon Ramsey recipe:rolleyes:'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632

From your earlier posts you've always given the impression ''he's driving to school anyway so why should payment be expected''. This has now modified to accept payment is due, but you obviously think £200 p.m. is too much.
Unless I'm wrong - they aren't friends/mates - it's purely coincidence they live close to each other.
You appear to think K is being fleeced by a contribution of £200 p.m. - but you equally accept it's far cheaper (and more convenient) than public transport.
Maybe it is 20% of K's salary but K chose to live/work there - maybe you should increase his salary to enable him to run his own vehicle? Not have his travel cost subsidized by a work colleague?
Atm it all seems to be about 'poor K' and his shyster work-colleague. Maybe the driver is equally !!!!ed off that a) he's expected to give free lifts then b) when he makes a charge of £200 it's the hot subject of staff-room gossip? Maybe the driver just wishes the bloke never arrived and that everyone else would stop discussing his business?0
