You dont have to sit sideways???

And if someone comes just move for a second.

Methinks you do - hips and knees are hinge joints, not ball joints:rolleyes:

most short haul planes i have been on which are the ones with least legroom, ppl are packed in like sardines and someone always up and down.

i dont think thats the issue. i just dont agree that people who can afford the seats, deserve it any more than those who need it.
ps i dont think flying with virgin is flying with a budget airline? ive never flown a budget airline, for the very reason were discussing! but a 9 hour atlantic flight should be little more comfortable than a 2 hour flight to the med, not because it costs more, but for health and safety .
and i dont think im entitled to it because i deserve it, but if its between a 6 foot 5 person and a average height family and the kids who decide to pay for it, then thats wrong,
the seats should be sold last when all needy people have been allocated, then sell whats left if any.

Flying with virgin is not the same as flying with budget airlines - you pay more for a better standard all round including the basic seats and absolutely get what you pay for IMO.

I could possibly afford the seat upgrades on virgin transatlantic but assuming family want seats together its c£200-£300 per seat each way so family of 3 = at least £1200 - £1800 extra but I choose not to and accept what I have paid for. I would personally have an extra weeks hol+ spends at the other end. At 6'2" I find virgin 33" pitch OK - my knees dont touch the seat in front wheras on short haul they do.

Re affording seats its not about deserving them - you pay premium for better facilities, just like you might wish to pay for a taxi transfer rather than be squashed on a bus seat...or should tall people get gratis limos on the basis they cant fit in the coach seats??

How would cabin crew know who'd been necking valium and who hadn't ?

They don't, they rely on people's not being so selfish and stupid to sit in the special seats when they're not supposed to. And they're relying for this on the very people who are so crazed out they have to take valium. Makes sense, non?

i have tried the feet in the isle thing, and you really cant.
the stewards are for ever pushing the money maker trolley up and down, then the food trolleys, then drinks, then clearing away, then hey do it all over again!, then other passengers walking up and down, you are forever pulling your legs in, so no chance of a kip on a long haul.i have found that if you can get a night flight you might be more luckier and get a few seats to your selves. when we flew to oz me and partner had a row each and laid out on them!

What is a 'good reason', and who decides this?

Everybody has the same class of ticket (although they may not have paid the same amount for it), so why should some passengers get preferential treatment over others?

If you think that everybody should be guaranteed seats with their party, then should single travellers be given a discount, as they are inevitably left with the cr*ppy odd seats that are left?

I suppose I am just being kind. If i had a legroom seat that I hadn't paid extra for and I saw a 6 foot 4 bloke looking like he was going to cease up then I would swap, but I'm like that!

I didn't say anything about guaranteeing seats together as that just isn't possible, it's just that if you really don't want to be split up then get there very early is all. I don't see that as preferential treatment, it's the same as riding on a bus really isn't it? Alternatively seats could be allocated on booking, just without having to pay.

I'm often a single traveller and I rarely have a crappy seat, I usually ask for an aisle and have never been unlucky yet.

j-bean60, arguments over the rights and wrongs of paying for emergency exits notwithstanding, if you're planning to take Valium or other drugs that could affect your alertness on board I would suggest you would not be fit to perform the necessary actions expected of someone sitting in an emergency exit seat. Please think about whether you'd be able to react appropriately in an emergency situation before booking.

I actually take one small valium before flying. I am still very alert and have all my faculties so would be perfectly able to "perform the necessary actions of someone sitting in an emergency exit seat"!!

I really don't think you would.

Please do not sit in emergency exit seats if you take this kind of medication.
