Yes Glam it would be my first HB. I can't put my finger on exactly what is up.
I just worry that everyone will think I am stupid for wanting one when if I didn't even go through with it:(

Ah hugs Mel. It's your baby and you can choose to have it wherever you like (within reason!) and if you change your mind 10 times between now and then that's your perogative (?sp).
Please don't worry what anyone else thinks - I couldn't give a toss what people think most of the time. I plan to say well I might have a HB, water birth, normal hospital birth or even an elective CS and pretend I'm too posh to push! That will keep them all guessing. I change my mind more than I change my knickers so people will expect it!
You do whatever you feel most comfortable with - if you are relaxed, your labour should be more relaxed and bubba will be content whether he/she is born in the penthouse suite of the Ritz or in a cardboard box!

listen to me - you'd think I'd done this before :rotfl:

But they won't if the real reason is because they know that they (or the midwives) don't have the expertise to ensure a safe delivery, because if they did tell you this in advance and something went wrong during the birth, you'd have a cast iron case to sue. So all they will ever tell you is that it will be safer to deliver by c section.

If there was no difference (or no significant difference) in the risk to the baby between a c section and a trial of labour in the setting of your choice, they would always recommend the trial of labour because this is cheapest. If they are recommending a c section it is because they know that in that setting the risks are significantly increased with a trial of labour and that therefore if they are sued, they will lose. If the risks are the same for both modes of delivery, and the trial of labour was handled as it should be, but the baby is not born safely, the court would not uphold a lawsuit against the hospital, because the reason for the poor outcome would have been the baby's presentation, and not the failure of the hospital to handle the birth in the safest way possible.

I strongly suspect that this is the reason why there is a variance throughout the country as to whether a c section is automatically recommended or not. So whilst I agree with Sami that a woman should not be told she has no choice but to have a c-section, I have no problems at all with a c-section always being very strongly pushed in certain circumstances if the doctor's medical opinion is that is the safest option.

If the John Radcliffe Hospital doesn't have midwives suitably trained to deliver breech babies then there isn't much hope for this country :) they have 2 maternity wards there - one for "normals" and one for "complicated" ones with a completely seperate medical team and dedicated midwives (this is by chance where I ended up when I was in with ketones through the roof and severe dehydration).

If a C-section is the safest way then I would certainly expect them to be able to explain WHY to me... Same as with any major operation - I would expect an explanation before agreeing to anyone slizing me open for any reason.

    Mel,

I am thinking of changing my mind, if it is not too late, the other way, and opting for a HB. Not too impresssed with any of the Midwives I have met that may be present at the birth and would prefer to deal with them on my own teritorry.
Just re-read what I wrote and it sounds like I am bit militant :p

anyone seen the new Take That video for Up All Night?! Bet they had a ball making it.

Am so gutted I can't go and see them in June in Manchester - we got standing tickets and I'll be about 28 weeks, probably not a good idea!
Anyone want 2 tickets? Oh - bit silly asking on here :rotfl:

Good Luck at the hospital MFD.

Weezl - he is absolutely gorgeous, and thank you so much for the detailed birth story:) It has really helped me.

Although I am now scared I am not going to be able to manage at home. Maybe I should have got the pethidine script to have on stand-by?

    Mel x

    Mel,

I'm sorry if my story worried you. :(

You've had 2 babies before, so your labour is much more likely to be manageable in a HB situation. Only 40% of first time mums who elect to HB end up doing the whole deed at home. Of other HB's the transfer rate is less than 5%.

This is because first labours are longer, and the woman has less understanding of what's coming and what her limits are. For me, and I wish I'd made this clearer in my story, sorry :o:D, it was the fear of what might come. In fact, I had reached the max intensity of the contractions, I just didn't know that I had.

About anyone thinking it's bad to change your mind, I certainly don't feel that's bad, I was changing my mind all the time as you can tell from my story. For what it's worth, I believe that if you will feel more comfy, more centered, more resourceful, more normal (whatever you need to feel) at home, then every extra minute at home will soothe you and bubs more, and make labour better and more positive. ;)Maybe you could start at home and see how you go? I wrote in my notes that I would like to labour at home for as long as all parties were completely comfortable with that decision.

Similarly, for a woman who really wants to be in hospital, I would want her to be in her safe place asap too.

Peth-wise, can the midwives not bring it? Or is there another quick way they know of to get some? From my experience loads of MWs are so pro-homebirth, I wonder if you rang the midwifery team and said you were thinking of needing to change your mind because of this, then I wonder if they might come up with a creative solution!

Anyhow, go with your own gut instincts and if anyone judges you, we'll all be round to wreak pregnant lady revenge on em!:D

    Love Weezl x

ems you can ask and hopefully they will say yes of course (unless you fancy being a scary one and refusing to leave the house, insisting they send a MW to you :rotfl:) if you discuss it with them you may decided yes/no from there.
good info can be found on the homebirth website I think its hombirth.net or something

    Edit - its http://www.homebirth.org.uk/
