Looks to me like Talktalk have adopted the approach of the Big 6 energy suppliers with their confusing plethora of different tariffs. I think Heinz is correct, this is surely going to cause problems for their cs staff.

I am always very wary when an existing provider calls me to offer a new 'package deal'. They would only call people if they were to make money out of it is my thought! I think I was right to be skeptical about this new ESSENTIALS package.

Currently, I pay £9.99p for the Talk International package, including free UK calls 24/7 and free broadband (40GB 'fair usage'). The new ESSENTIALS package would cost £10.49p/month - both have line rental of £11.25p/month.

On the ESSENTIALS package I would also get a 40GB limit (rather than 40GB 'fair usage', as now) on my internet and if I go over the limit get charged £5. Alternatively. I could pay £4 per month to raise my limit to 80GB.

I prefer to stick to my current package (and save 50p) and stick with my the 40GB fair usage policy (I have not been penalised to date). It also provides the best guarantee of free international calls in the long term as the ESSENTIALS package only provides free international calls to existing customers.

Also, on my current package I have been able to opt-in to the free 0845/0870 calls from 2nd June; it is not necessary to switch to the ESSENTIALS package to get these free 0845/0870 calls.

The TALK TALK website also mentions a FAIR USE policy on calls to 0845/0870 numbers and refers customers to the STANDARD TERMS AND CONDITIONS - the problem is the T&Cs contain no fair use policy on these calls! There is mention (elsewhere on the site) that calls to 0845/0870 are only free for the first 60 minutes of any one call and only if they are not calls to Indirect Access numbers. There is no mention of any limit to the number of calls/month or minutes/month (BT have a limit of 150 calls/month and 1000 mins/month).

I would love to get an 0870 number and write a script that generates me income overnight by calling my own 0870 number!!!

Another thing the salesperson told me is that by switching to the ESSENTIALS package I would get my Internet UPLOAD speed DOUBLED! Is that really correct?

Paul, that was really interesting to read. I have just changed my package to the essentials package. I wanted to leave a comment for all regarding the talk talk forums. I think the forums on money saving expert are much better than the talk talk forums. The forums on there seem very controlled with talk talk representatives deciding to close threads when they choose.

The talk talk modertoras dont seem to like people joining threads and also go on about spaming. Nah, anyone who wants information regarding talk talk, your best best is to seek advise on here.

As for there customer service on the telephone, it is getting better but still not there yet. Thought I would air my own opinon as you can on this site.

    Happy money saving all

    Hi Paul Varjac,

For broadband customers you must move to myTalkTalk Essentials to benefit from the 0870/0845 calls and the free daytime UK local calls. Do you have broadband with TalkTalk and if so how did you Opt In for these calls? We have recently asked for clarification on the fair usage policy but my understanding is this follows the 60 minute call limit as per other inclusive calls.

Lee - As there are many different scenarios we keep to one customer per thread on the TalkTalk forums to allow us to be more specific with our answers where as we can only offer genreal advise on here. Its the same people providing the official support!

    Cheers

Emma, you seem to contradict everything I have either read or been told by Talktalk themselves. I too am on the £9.99 (or £9.95) package, I can never remember which it is, which I joined when Charles Dunstun announced "Free Broadband Forever". I've phoned twice of late, to clarify this question about the free 0845/0870 numbers and what if anything I should do and have been told definately "nothing", you will automatically get them. The only change I should expect, is a reduction from 70 mins per call to 60 mins.

    Hi Islandman,

I have reported to the senior management team and project manager for the price changes project that there is a lot of confusion regarding the free calls we are introducing and who will qualify for them. As a result refresher training is taking place at the moment.

If you have broadband with TalkTalk you MUST move to the myTalkTalk plan to benefit from inclusive 0870/0845 calls and daytime UK landline calls. This is stated in the pricing notification at https://www.talktalk.co.uk/pricechanges

"From 1st May 2009, we are introducing free local calls. This will only be available for customers who pay their line rental to TalkTalk and opt-in. To opt-in call our sales team on 0800 049 7802. Customers with our Broadband service simply need to move to the myTalkTalk plan to enjoy inclusive local calls."

"The availability of free 0845 and 0870 calls is weekends only with the Talk UK Weekend Plan, evening and weekends with our Talk UK Evening & Weekend Plan, or at all times with the Talk UK Anytime Plan. Customers with our Broadband service simply need to move to our Essentials package to enjoy inclusive local and 0845/0870 calls."

For customers with line rental and no broadband services it will be possible to opt in for the calls on their existing tariffs.

CPS customers must take line rental with TalkTalk to quialify for these calls and must also opt in.

There is a lot of information at https://www.talktalkmembers.com.forums also on the price changes.

    Cheers

  • Seems like an object lesson in how to make things as complicated as possible to me. Why not just GIVE existing customers the inclusive 0845/0870 calls package instead of all the jumping through hoops etc? If the TalkTalk rep on here can't understand what's happening, what hope has the punter got?
