I bought three diallers a few months ago .I got 2 to work ,however I could never get one to phone home from my parents house .
To there credit orchid did not give up on me .they sent me not one but two V4 plus but they still didnt dial home from my parents house . THe V4 plus actually picked up a crossed line which BT sorted . I actually tried 4 different phones and couldnt get anything to force home .in the end orchid sent me a ranger phone to try .It worked first time .I now have 3 diallers to send back and new phones to pay for .
A big Thanks to Toby at Orchid .

I'm on BT lines at the moment. No chance of cable up here in the Shetland Islands. I do have an account with 18866 which is setup on the routing table and also 1899 is on the routing table.
I don't know whether you have the option of CPS providers up there but, if you do, I'd suggest opting for one of the firms offering free evening and weekend calls to UK 01/02 numbers - JustDial (although they've been the subject of a number of 'they don't reply to my e-mails' reports on MSE recently) or Primus.

For weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls, I'd suggest you use call1899.co.uk now because 18866's recent connection charge hike has made 1899 better value.

For calls to UK mobiles, I'd suggest 18185.co.uk (4p connection and 5p/minute weekdays [2p/minute at weekends]).

  • I was just wondering? I just bought a new phone (a southern bell freedom on special offer) from Argos for £15.00 and it stores all the numbers I use including the prefixes 18866 etc. (100 or so with names attached, so you just choose the name and press go) it also barrs up to 4 prefixes ie I have barred 1188 etc so what else would a separate dialer do?

Nothing more, as long as you use the right stored number at the right time.

I do exactly what you describe but have to remember to use memories with 'EW' suffixes to take advantage of my CPS's free Evening and Weekend calls) at the relevant times and to use memories with the 'D' suffix on weekDays.

The benefit of an Orchid would be that (1) you don't have to remember which route to use - the Orchid is programmed to do that for you - and (2) Caller I.D. would show callers' names because your phone's memories would then be programmed with the standard (prefix-less) number and the Orchid adds the prefix.

Depends if you use a different company at different time of day - e.g. 1899 during day and JustDial in evening - then you would have to have a set of "Daytime" numbers and "Evening" numbers repeated without the 1899 prefix.

If you're spending £15 then dialler or DECT seems just as easy and more flexible should you decide to add in more suppliers

  • I have a question regarding the programming of the Ranger 400 DECT phone (which would apply to any of the LCR phones).
Once the phone is programmed with your routing requirements, what would then happen if Orchid were to 'go bust' and you could no longer access them? How could you get rid of the programming so you can use the phone like an ordinary phone? I mean, with a dialler, you could just unplug it. Anyone know?
Hope this doesn't seem like a dumb question
  • anyone know the correct code to update (phone home ) the ranger 400 phone

orchid aren't the telecoms company, your existing routing is valid regardless whether orchid operate. Plus the ranger has manual instructions if ever needed
