    That's very strange.

I know you said that you added 18185 to the first dialler. Is it possible you have mixed up the two routing tables?
  • Is anyone using 1899 (via Telewest using 0808) with Orchid dialler experiencing a slow response - about 30-40 seconds from hearing the tones for the real number to hearing "this is a free call" for a UK landline call?

My standard test is to ring my own number. With a normal phone I ring the 0808 access number, get the Welcome message, then the "dial your number followed by hash", then I put in my home number starting with STD code and ending with hash, and within seconds I get the desired result.

With the dialler, which is set to insert five seconds of space between the access number and the number I want to dial, there is a 30-40 second wait between the end of the second set of tones and the desired result.

Does anyone know how the dialler puts in the trailing hash?

It has all worked fine until today. I have forced home just to be sure but no change. At the moment I have the box ticked on 1899 to say give ne the message - how do you have this set?

    Thanks

All the numbers are BT lines . The first one I set up was my own number and I addded 18185 to that and it worked fine .The second number didnt have 18185 but it wouldnt work without it .

wakeywakey, we noticed some sever lag on the 0808 1899 number via an Orchid today too on an NTL line. Don't know whats happened but I was hitting # manually on the phone and this seemed to work, otherwise it just seemed to be hanging for ages.
  • Hi

I had just turned off the tariff message in 1899 to see if that would make any difference, and was just wondering how long it would really take to have any effect on the tariff message. How do you have yours set?

I just tried out your tip with the hash and it works wonderfully. As soon as the delay after the second number going in starts I hit the hask key once and got the response immediately.

It's a useful work around, and at leat I am reassured that it probably isn't anything wrong at my end, or with the dialler or its configuration. Does this happen very often?

I am still wondering what prompts the dialler to put the trailing hash in after the number to be dialled though...

My working theory is that the dialler never did put a trailing hash in (to trigger 1899 to make the call) - and I have never put one at the end of my number to be dialled - but the timeout for 1899 to stop waiting for the trailing hash has changed. I will experiment with putting in my numbers with the trailing hash.

Who said phones were boring - more power in a dialler than an Apollo moon landing?

    Cheers

I have unticked the tariff message box and this was when I signed up about a month ago and it still gives me the message when I make a call.

I was really interested to see your post...as I was going to raise the same point!

A week or so ago I installed an Orchid dialler for some (even more non-tech than me!) friends. They have telewest and I have set most of their nos through 1899 (and initially some 18185). Yesterday after seeing here that 18185 still doesn't work for cable access customers I called my friends with instructions how to force dial - through my pc I had already changed their routing to dial 1899 instead of 18185). Today a plea for help (i had explained how to overide using 121 or unplug dialler in an emergency!)..phone apparently not working at all!!

Went round...checked routing....forced dialled again (and again!). After hanging on ages..as you say 30-40 secs..calls went through as usual. I think its peculiar to 1899 as nos dialled through dialler to other nos (eg free directory enquiries with 0800 no were fine). Until today it has been fine...we thought initially it was something to do with my friends efforts at force dialling - but obviously not!

Incidentally Orchid set up their 1889 routing with.....08081708708####

The other thing I have noticed..but this may be entirely incidental..their dialling tone on telewest has changed completely ...apparently over the last 24 hrs.

I also experimented with routing temporarily thru 18866...same delay problem.

I saw the comment (in another post above) re pressing hash key during the dialling process...but at what point??

See my post above.....at what point do you hit the # key?
  • If you were using a manual phone you would dial the 0808 number, wait for the welcome then the invitation to put your number in and the hash key - try this manually if you haven't done it. When the dialler does the same thing it generates the 0808 number followed by 5 hashes (these simulate the wait) and then the number you want to dial.

I don't think the dialler ever put the final hash key in, but it worked. But from today something in 1899 has changed (this is the theory...) and 1899 waits 30-40 seconds before it continues.

So the simple workaround is when you put your number in to dial just put the hash key in at the end. If I want to phone my mate on 01234 56789 I just dial 0123456789# and off it goes. When 1899 gets the hash it's happy and makes the call.

And of course if you forget the hash then just enter it when the extended wait starts...

    Well it works here...

Many thanks. I'll call them in the morning and let them know re dialling the hash. I'll report back....hopefully with good news!
