  • Greenwich - lovely, right next to the DLR at Deptford Bridge

Cardiff Central - seen better days but nice staff

Sheffield - very tired and worn, needs a lot of work doing

Birmingham Moor Street - ideal location, new and perfectly fine

Birmingham Central Bullring - very nice, staff friendly and knowledgeable.

Just to add our experiences over the last couple of years:

Cambridge Central – good location about 20 mins stroll to the city centre. On the leisure park, so plenty of restaurants within a few minutes walk, plus a Tesco for stocking up with drinks, toiletries etc. The nearby Earl of Derby did a great breakfast for around £5 rather than eat in the hotel. We have stayed here three times without any problems at all – basic but clean rooms and friendly staff. Only downside was parking as it could be quite expensive – we ended up using a website that allows you to park on people’s drives – cost us £10 for 3 days.

Cambridge Orchard Park – used this hotel this year (March) as we couldn’t get into the Cambridge Central location. recently opened, everything was shiny new. Easy to reach when driving in just off the A14, plenty of free parking, but not easy to walk into Cambridge. However, there is a bus service from the Busway stop into the centre of Cambridge – our tip would be to buy a day ticket which means you can travel to and from the centre as many times as you want during the day. There are also late buses back up to around 02:15 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. That said, a taxi into the centre was £8 between 8 of us, which the hotel arranged. Very friendly staff, and surprisingly good deals on drinks in the bar area, but very little else in the immediate area for food or drink - again, we tended to travel into Cambridge in the evening.

Ealing – used this location for a family visit to London. Although it is by no means central London, the close proximity of Ealing Broadway station (10 mins walk) and the Central and District lines meant it was a quick 20-30 minute journey to the central sights. (Note that if you buy an Oyster card from this station, you cannot get your refunds at Ealing Broadway station as it is not a LUL station.) When we stayed in October 2011, it had just opened so everything still new. Car parking quite reasonable at £5/day, but limited spaces and these are extremely tight. Plenty of eating places and shops about 10 minutes walk away on Ealing Broadway.

Caernarfon in North Wales seems nice. The surrounding area was good, it overlooks the docks and you can walk to town centre and castle in minutes.

What you mean to say is it overlooks the marina. Docks are what they have in dirty, industrial cities ;).
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

  • We stayed at the City road travel lodge it was very nice and really convienient for the buses from Kings cross station and a few metre from the underground quite new plenty of places to eat and an offlicence in the tesco express
  • My wife and I have visited many Travelodges here are some thoughts.
Bath Waterside - Great location, some rooms have views of the canal lock and you can watch the boats go through. Parking charge but cheap for Bath and you can walk everywhere. Food generally good and nice restaurant space. Some rooms are very near the ring road and noisy. Has lift.
Burford - Getting a bit tired looking but a great location in the Cotswolds especially at a cheap rate. Nice walk down into Burford, the Priory Restaurant best for breakfasts, eating out in other places can be expensive. No lift.
Kew Bridge London - Good, safe underground parking. 10 minute walk to station for trains to Central London, good walks along the Thames, Kew Gardens, Strand on the Green. Can be busy and noisy guests. Has lift.
Ely - On the ring road, pleasant but longish walk into the city. Very quiet and clean hotel, free parking on last visit(2010), lots of places to drink, Cathredral and river to visit. Worth a weekend visit.
Tunbridge Wells - Older coverted hotel with some character and creaky floorboards. Good sized rooms, a short walk to the centre but uphill on the way back. Food good and a nice restaurant and had a popular bar.
Hastings - Quiet location and clean hotel, short walk to the beach and old town.
Okehampton Whidden Down - Just off the main road, great little pub The Post Inn that does food a few minutes walk away. Great location to explore Dartmoor. Very quiet and well run.
Cheltenham - Busy on main road roundabout, car park charge, next to pub, but a bit far out from centre. OK for a night.
Canterbury Chaucer- converted older hotel - new rooms are very small with just a rail and no cupboards. Can be very hot. Small car park but can park fairly safely at the front. Traffic not too bad but frequent sirens as emergency services are near by. Great location - 5 mins to the centre but breakfast very basic.
  • Can anyone recommend a travelodge (or similar!) in central London, suitable for a family wishing to sightsee for a couple of days please? We have young children, so one that is 'fairly' quiet (I know this is London!) would be preferrable, but in a good central location.

    Many thanks

    Lou
  • In addition to my earlier question, does anyone 'know' when TL usually have their sales? ie - for a room in Oct half term, would I be better to book now or wait a few weeks hoping they will issue some sale rooms?

Book now - the price is likely to increase nearer the time.

The sales are for months and months ahead - the last sale covered Jan to March 2013 and the next sale will be for the months after that. Probably.

We had a really nice stay at Taunton a couple of years ago, stayed there for 5 nights, Just off the M5 there is a Sainsburys close by for drinks/snacks/breakfast and a really nice pub behind the hotel that did nice food and served a nice pint of Otter.

We thought it was really good as its in a nice place to explore, we went south coast one day and north coast the day after.

Also had a similarly nice stay in Illminster travelodge on the A303 although I didnt think it was such a good location as there isnt much nearby apart a petrol station and little chef/burger king. Although there is a very nice pub in the nearest village that does amazing food (but its not really walking distance)

Totally recommend Perry's cider mills if you are down that way (just outside Ilminster)
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
  • Stayed in the Fulham TL in May . Was very difficult to find , Had to ask for bedding and the Family room wasnt great , Also had to pay an extra tenner to book in b4 3 clock . If we didnt , we couldnt leave the luggage .
Stayed in one of the TL near Kings X , was ok and the pub across the road sells decent food n drink .
Have booked for the new TL thats getting built in Liverpool .
Thinking about booking TL near Norwich train Station , any body been there ???
