• I have a Playstation 3, which I primarily bought for the Blu-Ray player, (one of the best on the market according to some reviews).

What I did not know at the time but found out by accident is that Sony also produce a little box (it really is little) called 'Play TV' which lets you watch one channel while you record another, pause/record/fast forward and rewind live tv. Costs £49, link to it on Amazon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Play-TV-PS3/dp/B0017UV0UG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1236790583&sr=8-1

You plug your aerial into the box and the box into the PS3, put the software disc in and thats it, takes around 5mins. It gives better picture quality as the PS3 upscales it.

If you have a Blu-Ray remote you get a PlayTV overlay with the software which is useful but not crucial as you can use the PS3 controller.

Admittedly you do not get as many channels as it is freeview, but if like me you think Sky TV is a bit pricey for what you get then this is a brilliant little box. (You do get Virgin 1)

When you consider that a PS3 is a HD games console and Blu-Ray player and can also be used to watch TV, sounds like a great investment.

PS I don't work for Sony, I just got sick of Skyploitation and refuse to use them again.

Here’s the trick for a free upgrade to Sky + if you’re an existing customer.

Phone up to say that you are thinking of leaving Sky as you are never in to watch it so it’s a waste of time. Tell them that you use just use the internet to catch up with anything you’ve missed.

They’ll then try and persuade you to stay (have you heard of Sky+ etc) - plead poverty and say that the box is too expensive and you can’t afford the installation fee. They’ll then reduce the price - you still insist that you are too skint too afford it and they will eventually offer you a free box and installation. It worked for me about 6 months ago and it’s been great! You’ll still have to pay the monthly sub if you don’t have one of the more expensive packages though.

I don't exactly know what this refers to but...
I got Free Sky+ box, Free Installation, and a 3 month deal.
Just downgraded the package as cannot afford the full whack, but spending about £17.50 for a couple of the basic entertainment channels, and still have Sky+ facility on these channels. I am not paying any extra for Sky+
Obviously I cannot record anything I am not subscribing to eg Movies or Sport etc, but I wouldn't expect to be able to.

p.s I left Sky in summer of 2008, they regularly sent me letters and flyers with all the latest offers asking me to go back. Officially I should have been classed as a re-turning sky subscriber ( left less than 12months) but I think I got pretty much the same deal as NEW subscribers.
But, kids still not satisfied !! Now with all ads for HD they want to know why we haven't got that as well
Come the end of my 12 months, I will be quite happy to cancel Sky completely and see if I can get HD and or Multi-room.

Also, as many posters have said, be prepared to have to phone back several times to try and "negotiate" the best deal. Try different times, and days etc to catch different shifts of staff;)

Existing sky customer and have now just ordered sky+ (new box) for £45 including installation.

As I still have the normal box will they send out a new card for sky+ or will they use existing card as want to put the normal one in another room so will need the card?

If they use existing card where can I buy a decent one and for how much?

If you sign up for HD+, can you cancel HD element but keep box within 12 m ( can't see in t&c)

I'd say exactly the opposite.

The Direct Debit Guarantee gives you, the customer, total control because, if you dispute a payment call, then your bank is obliged to immediately reverse the transaction.

standing orders are customers’ instructions to their bank to pay a set amount, to a named beneficiary, at regular intervals (say on the 1st of the month) – either for a specific period of time or until cancelled.

direct debits are:
square-pdb.gifcustomers’ authority for beneficiaries to claim payments (variable in amount and frequency) from the customers’ accounts; andsquare-pdb.gifcustomers’ instructions to their bank to allow the taking of those payments. So, standing orders leave you in control, whoever is receiving the money cannot adjust the amount they receive, or when you send it, it is between you and your bank.

Even though there is the Direct Debit Guarantee, which is set up to prevent 'disagreements', the problem is that we can expect an amount to come out of the bank, but the beneficaries could change that amount.

Yes, they are supposed to inform you
Yes, you can get your money back

(And to give credit where credit is due Welcome finance recently took a DD out of my bank, yet had not told me it had been set up, which then forced my account into arrears - I was charged £30.00, which Welcome paid me back, as well as the duplicated payment, c'mon pick yourself up from the floor, I know its difficult to comprehend :rotfl: )

But the problems it can cause make it the last option for me now, if they'll take standing order, thats how I pay.

I am seriously considering cancelling sky, I would love Sky+, and it is something I have been considering, but I don't seem to watch that much telly any more, and a lot is freeviewable (is that a new word??? lol)

If I was to rid myself of Sky, can anyone point me in the right direction for the answers to these questions?...
Where can I get 'The History Channel'
Does anyone else show 'Lost'?
and
What is my best option for a PVR?

Hi Sorry if this is a stupid question but if you get this box deal do you still need a satellite dish?

Thanks in advance.

• My husband is an existing account holder and we've been wanting Sky+ for ages. We tried unsuccessfully during the quickly cancelled free box offer but thought we'd have another go with me registering for a new Sky account in my name with my bank account and it worked!!!:j

There seems no link on the address which makes sense as the house could be house shared or something. It might help that my surname is slightly different to DH's.

We've also saved £2 per month coz we didn't really watch the new or children's packages! DH will cancel his account with Sky tonight when it's quieter.:T

I agree that they really are pants at taking care of existing customers but what can else can non-cable area rural living bods who want film channels and premium sport do? It goes with the 512kbps broadband speed too. ;)

Lost is only on sky1 is it not so you would have to pay a provider for this channel.

Actually no, Sky 1 is also available on Virgin Media so no problems with the holy grail that is Lost :T
