Definately cook and slice your own. Its a fraction of the price. For your £7 you could get a whole chicken AND a gammon which should last more than a week even if you are really generous with it. Also, it can be frozen either in slices, or already made up in sandwiches :)

I do gammon in the SC and use it as ham - Argos are doing a food slicer half price atm so I am picking mine up today to make nice thin slices for sarnies :)

I will also do beef and pork - delish :)
  • Iceland have roasts at very good prices; they do rolled, de-boned stick-straight-in-the-oven joints. I'm not a meat eater, but I do like Iceland and my meaty neighbours are converted!

I can't stand pre-packed meat so I buy a gammon joint or chicken (and beef or pork if it's on offer) and use that for sandwiches. I've also got an electric food slicer so cook the joint, let it cool then slice thinly.

This is the half-price meat slicer at Argos, only £14.99 so it'll pay for itself in a couple of weeks as a joint goes so much further than slicing by hand.

  • Thanks everyone...frugal and anguk....the reason i posted is because i bought the white slicer yesterday...I also had a free £5 voucher from the last Argos promotion,so only paid £9.99 for it....i bought it to slice my homemade bread, but i havent been very successful with that,so i wondered if i could do my own cold meat for sandwiches instead...good to hear that it works well for that..it may have been a cost effective purchase afterall. :)...im off shopping soon gonna look and see who has best price small gammon or roast beef...buy a bit bigger so that it will do dinner tonight and sandwiches for Thurs,+ Fri...thanks again everyone.

    Hi cooking-mama,

I have the argos slicer and it's great for slicing meat, but I find it works better if you leave the meat until it's cold before slicing for sandwiches.

These threads have more advice that may help:

    Sandwich Meat

    Ham economics

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

  • blimey - you read my mind! I was wondering about this when I was making lovely sandwiches for us both this morning (hm bread, hm pickle, chicken - we know how to live lol).

Brilliant advice, thank you. I'm going to get a turkey crown and a ham, cook 'em, slice 'em and freeze 'em in portions. LOADS cheaper.

I think I'll buy a meat slicer too. But sometimes I feel like I spend out quite a lot of money in order to save money.....

I have been buying a frozen chicken breast joint from Aldi - on offer at moment for £2.99. Its a boneless double breast - like a crown. Cooks in about an hour, meat is really moist and cuts up well for sandwiches, you get loads for the money. So much nicer than precooked meat.

Thanks Frugal and Anguk. I just bought the meat slicer so I will get hubby to collect tonight. I usually buy Asda or Tesco frozen chichen breast abt £3.74 for the kilo. I usually spice it up with some cajun or Jamaican spice then roast and slice.
Cooking Mama, can I ask what the problem was with the bread as I quite often make my own as well.
  • How do you freeze the cooked meat? Just wrap it in clingfilm and freeze?
:o Trying to become debt free but this site makes me spend a fortune!!! :o
