Well it went quite well, after the first couple of slides it was quite smooth. I did have to stop it a few times to move the meat from the back where it came out as it was clogging up the blade. It did do a good job of the meat though. I am not sure how money saving it was as DD and myself kept eating the gammon (cooked with orange, ginger, cloves and maple syrup).
It was a bit of a fuss to clean the main unit though as I seemed to have collected a lot of crumbs in between places - not sure if I am missing something that should come apart or not.
All in all, I am quite pleased with it and think it was well worth the money.
:T:T:T:T Well done0 -
I just have to find somewhere to keep it now. That is the only thing if it goes in a cupboard and it is not at the front, it becomes more trouble to get it out than anything else.0

Frugal and Firebird - you just have to show that slicer who is boss! they smell fear on you, you know! be firm but fair! lol, seriously, make sure that you have a firm grip on the meat and GO for it!
I too was terrified of mine (and I used to work on a deli counter and used the slicer no prob!) made an awful mess of the first few tries I had then OH took over. flexed his manly muscles and from the first could get lovely thin slices! after watching him a few times I came to the conclusion I was too gentle with it! brute force isnt needed just a firm hand!
believe me - you will soon get the hang of it - different pressure on the meat is needed for different meats and you will soon learn!
Its worth persevering as its soooooooooo moneysaving! and somehow it can transform a tough (overcooked) joint into something worth eating!0 -
I've cooked a gammon joint in the SC today and I will have a go with my new Argos slicer tomorrow. I think it will be much better if the meat is chilled. will try and let you know how I get onI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Meritatin - I will take that in the context that I am sure you mean but I have to say my mind did start to wander a bit there;):rotfl::)0

Meritatin - thanks for making me laugh out loud re the 'firm grip on the meat and get on with it' advice.
I cooked ham in slow cooker and just sliced it up. Quite pleased with results, but got loads of crumbly bits of ham left over. Also 2 litres of tasty stock. I guess this is occupational hazard for a serial slicer so would welcome any suggestions as to uses???????
I think the Argos slicer is £14.99 well spent but its a !!!!!! to clean. xx0 -

How about mixing the crumbly bits with chicken and a white sauce and making either a potato or pastry topped pie?0 -
Frugal that was the same for me but my DD and myself just devoured them as I worked - can't make a habit of that though0

Hmm thats what i thought thanks, i'm thinking of getting something like this
http://www.lakeland.co.uk/kenwood-slicing-machine/F/product/1236?src=gabrs&sq=meat%20slicer
when money allows? do you think it would help?
ham hocks are a great idea my local butcher does them quite cheaply from what i recall, the meats nicer than plastic ham too.
turkeys are funny things i keep thinking i should buy them, then the price puts me off, but i bet lb for lb it's better value than chicken but it seems like such an outlay all at once.. (ill never get it in my slow cooker though haha)
Or this
