Thanks Frugal and Anguk. I just bought the meat slicer so I will get hubby to collect tonight. I usually buy Asda or Tesco frozen chichen breast abt £3.74 for the kilo. I usually spice it up with some cajun or Jamaican spice then roast and slice.
Cooking Mama, can I ask what the problem was with the bread as I quite often make my own as well.
The bread got torn rather than sliced, then it all broke up as it was forced through the back of the slicer..but to be honest it was a very large loaf...ive baked a smaller one today,im gonna try and slice that one later...someone posted elsewhere that they got 29 slices from a tiger loaf using the food slicer.
Right now im roasting a pork leg joint(special offer,£2.99Kg Morrisons)hopefully enough for tonights dinner and tomorrows packed lunches.
PS,thanks for the links Pink-Winged,very helpfull.

Having got sick of little bits of bone and gristle <retches> in the pre packed ham I've bought some of the gammon joints in Mr S 3 for £10. What a nice treat to see the food slicer half price too!!! Have reserved it so off to buy it in a mo yay!

Gammon in the SC for sure! Gammon are on offer at lidl and budgens atm, and probably elsewhere too. I got one last week and did it in sugar water in the slow cooker and it was delish. Pulled it apart with a fork and had shredded pork sarnies omnomnom!

Just to say Ive also been doing hams/gammons ( nigella style with coke -drool) and use a electric carving knife, argos basic one for about a fiver.
pretty good and a bit cheaper than the other slicer. which Id love but cant afford right now!

    This Ive come to know...

  • Wow the slicer worked a treat on the pork joint, cannot believe how many slices i got....and it also worked very well with the smaller loaf,I think apart from my first loaf being too large,i was maybe trying to cut it too thin...im well pleased with the 1/2price food slicer, this is gonna pay for itself in no time....will be slicing chicken breast tomorrow.

The slicer is also great for thinly slicing the donner kebab from The Takeaway Secret book. ;)

  • DID SOMEONE SAY DONER KEBAB? Oh dear, now I'm craving one. So I'm just off to the turkish wholesalers to buy a whole doner joint ready for slicing......lol.

Mr Tesco has ham/gammon 1/2 price at the moment. £3.99 a kilo. Mine is in my slow cooker now. The house smells lovely - like Christmas.

Speaking of which, I was thinking that big joints of meat are usually reduced on Xmas Eve and then straight after the holiday. Might be a good time to stock up.

Thanks again everyone for brilliant advice - just for the record, by going homemade on the sandwich front (and buying bottled water and cola from supermarket, in bulk and on offer, and not from the expensive deli) I have reduced my husband's spend on lunches by about £450 a year.:A

Well done on the savings. I am looking forward to having a go with mine this weekend. I will see what is on offer at Asda.
Cooking mama, it sounds as if it is working well for you.:D

Don't buy Donner kebabs, make your own! Get yourself a copy of The Takeaway secret from the library or Amazon have it for £3.76 with free delivery and make your own Donners. So much cheaper and healthier and you can slice it on the half-price electric slicer. ;)

There's a big thread about the book here:
