  • As a change from ham, would you consider chicken breasts for sandwich filling? Three bags for a tenner at Farm foods would give you around 18 breasts, you could chop it up and have chicken with stuffing or mayo/coronation chicken/chicken tikka or tandoori etc. If you throw in a bit of salad then one breast should stretch to two rounds of sarnies.
  • i buy the ham hocks off the butcher counter at morrisons, they are 1.49 each, boil them up- they arent pretty, but the ham is lovely off them and cheaper than a pack of crappy ham...
  • Hi :)

I've recently started buying joints of meat to cook in my slow cooker and slice up for sandwiches because the pre-packed ham was just getting so expensive. I've done gammon and beef so far and they've been lovely.

Other fillings i do are coronation chicken - leftover meat stripped from the sunday roast or some cheap chicken thighs/legs roasted and stripped, mix with mayo, a tsp of curry powder and a tsp of mango chutney. This is also nice as a jacket spud filling. Tuna and sweetcorn is another cheap one if you buy the tuna on offer and use value sweetcorn and mayo. Cheese and pickle - grate the cheese to make it go further than if sliced from the block.

  • For cooking I use the Sainsburys basics cooking bacon. It is £2.27 per KG and one pack (about £1.50) does us for 4-5 meals when we add it to pasta sauces, home made pizzas, frittatas etc.

It is really tasty too! No good for DH's sarnies but deffo the way to go for cooking.
  • I'm the same as Charlee, gamon hocks off Morrisons butchery department, cooked up with stock veg (onion carrot, parsmip swede & a bay leaf) Hey presto one fresh cooked with chips or HM cauliflower cheese (for 3) some left for sarnies or ham & split pea soup, one in the freezer and 2 liters of stock for soup.

Most stores do packs of cooking bacon - my brain has gone dead & cant remember if I got my last one from Lidl or Aldi - it was very good quality most of it was half rashers, I even use cooking bacon in sarnies

    Hi there

I am also a massive fan of cooking bacon - Sainsburys often puts streaky bacon or bacon chops in their cooking bacon bags - in the basics range, good value.

I was wondering about alternatives to ham for sandwiches - i was thinking about egg mayo, or Tuna mayo. Even a flask of HM soup with bread ( OH took HM tomato to work yesterday, made with Aldi big 6 toms, and a few slices of bread. I dont buy packaged sandwich ham as its really expensive. OH likes bacon when we go on holiday ( Self catering) so i save up the streaky from the bacon misshapes bags and use it as normal bacon. I use the other small pieces for quiche and carbonara. Just as tasty - its sacrilage to cut up good bacon, when scraps will do

    Hi Ragz

There is a thread discussing the prices of ham on the bone for sandwiches. My favourite sandwich is coronation chicken , eeked out with toasted nuts and seeds and dried fruit. Delicious!

I'd consider swapping that cheese and ham a few days a week - that's very high fat to be having every day. As someone else has posted already, chicken breast fillets can be bought in bulk fairly cheaply, and are much, much lower in fat.

Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions. Think I will definitely be buying myself a meat slicer and cooking joints.
I only buy FR chicken so he's not getting that in his SWs! Will have to think of lower fat fillings, though maybe if we get decent meat he'll let me leave out the cheese...

Cooking bacon sounds good, wish we had a B&M near here, guess I'll have to settle for the Tesco one. Do Lidl do packs of cooking bacon, I know they do lardons...?
