Sandwich Meat

I've never bought joints to put in sandwiches, but I love cold meat when it is left over from a Sunday joint, in sarnies the next day. I just slice it and use it, with a bit of salt. Oooooooo, it's making my mouth water. Seems like a good idea to roast a small joint and use it in this way, probably work out cheaper than buying quality ham and such like from a deli counter.0

Hi steven,
There was a thread on this subject fairly recently that should help so I'll add your post to it to keep the suggestions together.
This thread may help too:
Ham economics
Pink0 -
I get through quite a lot of ham/bacon, with DH having 2 ham and cheese SWs a day for work and I use bacon in cooking. However I've realised that per kilo I'm paying £10-15 for either. I considered buying gammon joints and cooking and slicing for SWs but I don't think I'd be able to make the slices thin enough to make it economical (maybe a meat slicing machine??)
Has anyone managed to find an OS solution to the Ham/bacon problem or do you just avoid buying them altogether?June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I use a gammon as it's much cheaper- Especially if its cooked in cola.
Bacon- I use Lidl's stuff- very yum pretty cheap!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
I buy gammon for £4 a kilo, boil then roast and just cut as thin as I can - might invest in a slicer but I reckon at that price I can afford slightly thicker slices!
I make pancetta style bacon for cooking from belly pork (£3 ish a kilo) which is great in stuff for flavour but ni good for brekkiePeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Same here, buy a big joint and then cook it. If there is an offer on at the supermarket, I will pick up a number and then freeze them. Tesco do 750g gammon joints 3 for £10 at the moment, so 2.25 kilo's for £10.
I was really lucky as I inherited my grandparent's meat slicer and it works a treat. We can cut the meat super fine, down to wafer thin style and then I put it in smaller packs and freeze it.0 -
I've got a meat slicer too and it'a amazing how ,any slices you can get out of a joint.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Bacon I tend to buy asda's Smartprice Bacon offcuts. It's much cheaper than bacon and is basically made up for misshapes which are fine for cooking.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0

I like Sainbury's cooking bacon. I don't shop there, but pop in now and then to buy a few packs. They often have massive "eye" pieces which I save for bacon steaks, and then all the usual cooking bacon bits. Delicious.
I buy joints on offer and slice them when cooled. I don't get it as thin as I would like, but its good enough for now!
Aldi's small joints are ideal for two

Im having a back to really basic week this week and am ..making my own dry cured bacon....i think this may be a step further than is reasonable...but there was some pork loin on sale in asda and all it takes apparently is rubbing in a handfull of sea salt and sugar in every days and keeping it on a slope so the liquid runs off - i'm on day four now...and it looks very bacony ! :T
I also have a pork joint I'm intending to brine half of at the weekend ( roast the other half)
so it'll be homemade gammon too..
I think the price of gammon is ridiculous considering theprice of pork shoulder
but wish me luck...I hope i dont poison the family with this one !;)Fight Back - Be Happy0
