  • If you use all the meat to make sandwiches in one go then freeze them you don't have to worry about how long the meat will keep.

Same here, and also they make wonderful toasted sarnies when popped on the health grill, particularly ham and cheese. :D

  • Do you mean make up sandwiches with the meat and freeze the whole sandwich or just portion the meat up and freeze. I have heard about people who make sandwiches and freeze them but have always been a bit dubious, would the bread not be a bit soggy as the meat defrosts inside? Would like to give it a go though as would save lots of time during the week.

I just freeze the meat slices - I don't always use them for sandwiches - extra portions you can defrost quickly come in very handy if you have to stretch a roast dinner for unexpected guests. or on nice days you have a meat to go with salad. if I haven't used all the Sunday joint up by Tuesday the remainder gets sliced or chunked and put in the freezer for another time. Ive made many a chicken curry using up all the leftovers in the freezer!

  • I have a large chest freezer full of topside, silver side, boned turkey breast, pork and lamb. All reduced in price.I cook three different joints at a time then slice with the meat machine and then vacuum pack.it saves a fortune.
  • Just a little update on this. I bought a large chicken from Sainsbury's yesterday, cooked it and pulled all the meat off. Divided it up and got enough for 10 well filled sandwiches, although I'm sure others could get more. Previously I was paying £5 for 2 packs of the chicken breast slices in Tesco which would make 4 sandwiches and some scraps for the cats so I'm pretty pleased that I won't have to buy any more sandwich meat for another 2 weeks and pleased with the saving. Now intending to do the same with gammon. I also then made stock in the SC overnight so feeling quite virtuous. I'm pretty new to OS living but finding it does get easier the more you do things and gives great satisfaction when wasting less and saving more :)

When I do a joint I always like to slice a bit for sandwichs, I just freeze them, dont have a vacuum pac, do you think they are worthwhile. I hae been thinking of getting one.

  • Well like other people I am sick of expensive, nasty prepacked ham. Even buying it from the butchers their ham is not fantastic.

So I bought a £2.99 Aldi gammon joint and boiled then roasted it following my Delia recipe which always works well. Sliced it with my new Argos slicer. I put 20 slices in the freezer and we ate the rest!

I am now going to do the same with a joint of beef. Hubby says its been really nice in his sandwiches this week and I am really pleased. Any ideas for different meats that will work well would be welcome.
