Sandwich Meat

When I do a joint I always like to slice a bit for sandwichs, I just freeze them, dont have a vacuum pac, do you think they are worthwhile. I hae been thinking of getting one.
I personally wouldn't. I just freeze in portions as you have been doing. Then defrost and use in sandwiches. I'm sure a vacuum pack works very well, but so does a freezer and you've already got one of those0 -
I use sausages a lot. Proper butchers ones. Cook a tray full, let cool then refrigerate, then they can be sliced quite thin. Big sausages you can get one in a sandwich rather than two. Or in a wrap. Even the children like them but DH is in heaven!YORKSHIRELASS wrote: »Well like other people I am sick of expensive, nasty prepacked ham. Even buying it from the butchers their ham is not fantastic.
So I bought a £2.99 Aldi gammon joint
I used to do this, but their meat isn't aways much better. Often the cheap gammons aren't even uk meat and they are still injected with a lot of water and chemicals.June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

made the mistake of buying pork shoulder, didn't realise what a fatty joint it is. Abandoned the sandwich meat idea with that one, went for a roast for 2, pulled pork for 2 and made up some pork and stuffing sandwich filler for 2 (mixed with a little mayo to bind).
Am also warming to the idea of buying a meat slicer to speed up the process and get even more slices out of the meat.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Ham costs around £15-£25 per kilo in the supermarket.
Considering pork is around £5-£15 per kilo, that makes ham very expensive.
Has anyone tried making their own? I've read a few tutorials but they look like a lot of work (perhaps that is why ham is so expensive, but the cheaper stuff is just nasty reformed meat!).
I'm going to just try a roast pork this weekend and using slices of that for my packed lunch next week. How long will the slices last for in my fridge?0 -

If you keep the pork in the piece then it'll last about a week. Sliced it'll last a couple of days.
Ham isn't too difficult to make from what I can see. There is some work involved though.0 -
If you buy a gammon joint they are quite cheap and all you have to do is cook it, probably not has cheap as curing it yourself but much, much better then sliced ham0

Sorry to repeat myself, have posted similar on another thread, but the Asda 750g gammon joint for £3.50 would do loads of portions, yes you can freeze it after it's cooked, but if you want it for sandwiches, layer useable portions between baking parchment or similar.
For sarnies I reckon you'd get 14 days worth out of it.
Can also be perked up with a garlic clove shoved in the meat when roasting, or rosemary sprigs - whatever takes your fancy really.0 -
I have just put a crackling pork join in the oven. Cost £5 for half a kilo from sainsburys. I have stuffed it with sage and onion, and scored the top for crackling. Hopefully I can slice it like ham and I can use the leftovers like ham for the week.0
