Sandwich Meat

Options
Ok im sure some of you guys have a better way of getting meat for sandwiches.

right now i've been buying ready sliced meat , ham, chicken etc for my kids sandwiches for thier lunchbox. But really im not happy about it because even the most innocent looking slice of meat seems to be packed with loads of added ingredients i think quite frankly my kids could do without.

does anyone cook/slice thier own meat?

Im thinking buying things like a large turkey breast joint or ham joint and shaving meat off it myself has to be better than buying meat packed with addatives.

Anyone else do this and how do you find it works out cost wise?? what meats do you use and what do you use to slice it??

so far ive only tried boiled ham or chicken

for chicken, i just tend to shred it, as i find it goes alot further than slicing

and the ham, well as it works out alot cheaper than shop bought stuff,so it doesnt matter that i cant slice it wafer thin, its more chunks lol

Also i find cheaper cuts works quite well, so for the boiled ham i tend to buy hocks at around £1.30ea, and from these i can get roughly 1lb of meat (they also take less prep work than a proper gammon ham)

as for chicken, i just buy as large a bird as i can, use the brown meat as a roast, and then save the breasts for using in sarnies

If you buy something like a turkey crown, its gonna work out more expensive per lb than buying a whole turkey, so just buy whole birds, and like a chicken, use the brown meat for roasts, pies, currys, etc. and the white meat, shredded for sandwiches

Hmm thats what i thought thanks, i'm thinking of getting something like this

when money allows? do you think it would help?

ham hocks are a great idea my local butcher does them quite cheaply from what i recall, the meats nicer than plastic ham too.

turkeys are funny things i keep thinking i should buy them, then the price puts me off, but i bet lb for lb it's better value than chicken but it seems like such an outlay all at once.. (ill never get it in my slow cooker though haha)

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I boil gammon which I pick up in Lidl and also buy turkey legs cheaply (£1 - 1.50 each). This makes good sandwich meat. I have a slicer which I bought from Lidl cheaply a while ago but usually just slice as needed.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

I'd just bung it in my SC in some water for a few hours, or if i was pushed for time, stick it in a large pan of water and boil.

I've got one of those electric slicers and it's worth it's weight in gold! I was worried that it would end up like other gadgets stuck in a cupboard but it gets used at least twice a week.

For sandwiches I either buy a gammon/ham joint and stick it in the slow cooker to cook, when it's cold I slice it on the machine. I also slice joints of meat for roasts, the slices are adjustable so I cut it a bit thicker for dinner then thinly slice the lefovers for sandwiches. A joint seems to go so much further when it's been sliced on the machine and you can also use it to slice home-made bread too. ;)

This something that I've been thinking of too. There's only 2 of us, and I'm wondering how long the cooked meat would last for?

I know what you mean, when I got the electric slicer I went through the fridge slicing everything! Meat, cheese, cucumbers, bread, nothing was safe! :rotfl:

I would guess a week in the fridge as long as you stored it well and cooled it quickly after cooking but you could always freeze some sliced if you had too much.
