no this is the full treatment needed.:p
ive always broken, schooled etc but sent em off to "finishing school" so to speak in the past but i cant risk it now... in my "hay"day i would have just gone in there all guns blazing and caught her even if it meant hitting the dust a few times...now i just look and feel like a ninny......BUT not a disabled ninny..:D
i would get a young rider for her to let off steam with and then i will school her to drive after about a year.Sensible
Well, I'm not up to date with livery charges (LIR!) but if that £120 is for a full week with, say, minimum 5 good training sessions then it doesn't sound bad for what I'd expect over your way.
You could always do a crafty ring around & compare what others are charging.0 -
Its less than i would have charged ten years ago, so not bad! Have you seen the person work with horses alfie? I think its worth both comparing local proces and having a look at them work with some horses...
Its cheap if its good schooling imo, but its very expensive should it be not very nice training imo.. So if you like the way the person works i think its fair.

oh i will be doing my "miss marple" impressions...checking them all out. this quote was from a chap whos family breed/show welsh cobs...does all the big shows ie olympia etc.he also rides /shows stallions.... they train to drive mainly. BUT there are others....what i dont want is RUBY stuck in a posh place being ignored except for an hour a day for an exorbitant amount. she needs to be in the thick of it with activity. are you able ??????
Not to back now. I could get one up to lunging and longreining with tack ready to back and bring on, which is what i will do when we next get. In all honesty, it would make more sense for tou to find someone who will take her right through her basic training.
This is a HuGe stereotype, and not all are like it, but i am wary of old school welsh cob showing people and arab showing people. Some are excellent, but....miss marple it will need to be...showipng people know what looks good when being inspected iyswim.
I agree about a posh ace doing nothoing, but there is another option. I am not a natural horsemanship person exactly...but they often start horses tpreally well, not because of technique but because they have thought hard about it. Also, as you want to drive her, a person with a classical dressage bent (often also have a natural outlook unlike competition dressage) should spend significant time in long reins with her, and excellent sta to driving as well as ridden work. There is a classical dressage club in salisbury....you might enquire there if they know any one your way. I know there are classical dressage clinics on the forest.0 -
iv always been ok with the breaking/schooling to drive... i actually find that easy. "choccy" took me a week of schooling/long reigning and then the cart in a day.[he was never broken to ride tho, except kids sat on which he was great with] i put flo [mini] in a cart straight off to see how she went and no prob and shes not even broken to ride ! i am a firm believer in not faffing about re the cart. IMO i think if you take too long it allows doubt of what they are seeing/doing to creep in and then one panic takes a lot of undoing..... i just act as if they are the experts and im just tagging along. so its more the riding side and manners i need done for my rubes. i DO NOT WANT HER SPIRIT BROKEN.... i like to meet em half way, respect rather than superiority....[famous last words !!!]
p.s. know what you mean tho cos she has a stunning trot and with the right person they could really enhance it...0 -
Would someone do a home visit? Sometimes there are people around who will. That way Ruby would be in her own environment & what you don't pay for livery can go on a longer training session(s)?
Just a thought.0 -
i get what you mean BUT believe you me its like alton towers there sometimes with what that mob get up too.:rotfl::rotfl:
there is plenty of space to set up a school but the others would cause havoc even 2 fields away if they knew rubes was doing something without them....out of sight is out of mind...!!!:D0 -
:rotfl: True. I know exactly what you mean. We get The Charge of The Light Brigade impressions with added vocal effects when our 2 see or hear other horses in the lane.0

Have you had a look at the IHDG website and forum. I read (stalk) on there a lot and have learnt so much despite not having a horse at the mo. There is a really good chap on there called Derek Clark but I can't remember where he lives. HTH

My record is backing and hacking on the same day.......but, that was after three years of raising the creature, and her following at foot while her dam was ridden, lunged, schooled. Lots of handling.
I have never had a bad experience backing. I find the real questions are asked on the third or so ride when they start to get the idea of balancing under weight if a rider and often try a buck. Its all fair, they have to ask the question to receive the answer.
Training for harness would terrify me. Do NOT like driving.......you spend so long training you seat and legs to be primary jsource of communication then driving that gets taken away! I feel very wary!0
