The poppy mentioned earlier. Picture isn't 100% accurate on colour, but if anything, it was nicer. Just a common or garden opium type, I know.

I do so much prefer the singles. The marking on that one was lovely. We get a lot on the plots because we used to have a lot of East European plotters but some many are fluffy bundles or that pale red with a small black blotch.

Last year there were stacks; I suspect the harsh winter pushed them into germinating. Occasionally we get dark reds singles and plush purple or deep pink almost fuschia coloured flowers. I wish I could isolate them and just grow the singles I like best.

WELL..... if you want a "quick fix " of small petite single poppies [mongrels!] go to the cake/bread making shelf in your supermarket and buy a bag of poppy seed [for the tops of bread ?] and spread em around on a spare spot in the garden etc. :) they come up as the prettiest single lemons/lilacs/creams [i think my last seeds were from australia ?]
theres like millions of seeds for a couple of quid...:D
those that stick to "breeds" will be holding thier head in thier hands now.... :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I have got a couple of paperbags full of poppy heads I need to thresh. I only save the singles and the better colours but there are so many of the fluffy things that I cannot keep them true, particularly with the swathes of poppies that grew everywhere last year.

For some the allotment committie do not seem to object to poppies like they do some other flowers?

So some will go in baking and some will flower and I will root out the doubles and the boring colours

I will find and show you a "fluffy one" that will have you eating your words, but not now, as a Panto-ing we will go......again! :o

PS. Had a very successful bonfire today, having thinned all the hazels in the garden and cleared the other prunings etc that were waiting to be disposed of. Almost tidy! :D

i have just volunteered to sell .....water lilies and nest boxes grown/made by an elderly chap with a mentally disabled son who is in the olympic swimming team !!:D
he is desperatly trying to raise funds as it will cost nearly £800 for his sons accomodation whilst there....

ive had lillies from him in the past and they are good healthy ones. £4 white £8 red. bless him, they had thier son late in life and struggle but i will help if i can. i look on it as he is at least selling something to earn the money not just holding his hand out. he offered commision but even "del boy" couldnt do that....;)

so ive got to put my selling head on to my posh/rich/everyday friends and wring em dry !!:rotfl::rotfl:

This list may help if you know what type the hedge is, Rummer.
There's also a bit more information on this page

Hedge laying down here is traditionally between October - March when the sap is dormant.

Oh dear, our hedge is Lonicera nitida, which it says prune 2-3 times in the growing season. No wonder it always looks such a bally mess. I went out and pruned some of it yesterday when the sun was shining, but too windy today. Lots of it need lots of pruning. :( It's down both sides of the back garden (which is 20 metres long) and also down one side of front garden, but our lovely neighbour has been pruning that for us. We should get him a nice bottle of wine! I hate the bally stuff, no flowers, boring hedge. I'd love to grub it all up and have a rose hedge instead, but neighbour other side doesn't want roses as they're too prickly. :(

PS it's high maintenance with all the pruning too, what a waste of time and energy for such a boring hedge! I hate it!

TOMOROW IS THE DAY TO GET MY HEAD DOWN, NOT BE DISTRACTED AND DO THE WORK...... after iv put 6 headcollars on 6 mini nutters ready for farrier on thursday...:D

my friend [where we keep hoss's] has pointed out that if RUBY lives as long as barney ,we will be in our 80's  and the thought of us on zimmers FINALLY catching her .... has made us take up the task of finding someone to take her away to tame/break/school her THIS YEAR.
ive been quoted £120 a week, does this sound reasonable??? of course the first hurdle is catching her which is a pain as i can walk her anywhere [she follows me],and she feeds from hand. but she is just not up for it at the mo.....

no this is the full treatment needed.:p
ive always broken, schooled etc but sent em off to "finishing school" so to speak in the past but i cant risk it now... in my "hay"day i would have just gone in there all guns blazing and caught her even if it meant hitting the dust a few times...now i just look and feel like a ninny......BUT not a disabled ninny..:D

i would get a young rider for her to let off steam with and then i will school her to drive after about a year.
