I think I dont like anyone dictating to me, so I chafe heavily at quotas and restrictions. HMRC are an unavoidable evil, Defra I'd prefer to avoid totally. Life's too short to do things you dont want to do.

I think the worst time was during the foot & mouth. Defra may well be responsible for the demise of half the rainforest judging by the enormous & almost daily tomes that came through the letterbox. About 1% was actually relevant to us but it all had to be systematically waded through.
Ask them which disinfectant was best to use at the gate, though, & there was total, uncomprehending silence for weeks on end as I recall. :(

I had a two hour lesson and I adored it! There were also lengths of well spun yarn in amongst the lumps :rotfl: Currently trying to convince my husband that it would be a great investment :D

It was all absorbing and soooooo relaxing, I loved the natural rhythm of it and I so want to dye, spin and crochet my own yarn. If I could have some sheep in the garden I would ;)

In fact I was wondering if there was such a thing as a rare breeds adoption scheme so you could sponsor a sheep and get some of their yarn each year, then I would be truly in heaven :)
with fear of sounding "show off" i DID some combing and attempts at spinning in a berber village in the atlas mountains...when you see what the women there produce it is amazing and truly beautifull with VERY basic tools !! think they were just humouring me but secretly felt sorry re my attempts......

Have you tried a drop spindle or Turkish spindle?

rhiwfield they are ox horns & some describe them as hunting horns - if you take a look on ebay you'll see some.

rhiwfield.....my horn has exactly the same "reed" bit on mine but it has a horn likkle cover over it...it def makes noise because of this...does it look like there has been another part ? also in the pics on link from itsmehonest it shows some with what looks exactly like yours without a cover...???

Alf, forgot to say your's is prettier than mine ;)

Itsme's Erchenko ? had a light bone reed bound with silk. Metal insert on this thing is industrial grade . Take more puff than I've got to vibrate it :D.

Have you ever thought of charging admission to your house as a sideline, maybe call it Alfie's Old Curiousity Shop?
