Can you please bear in mind I often go to bed at 7pm with my munchkins. I've no hope of keeping up with this thread if you all chat til near midnight
Spinning, clarinets, south American travels, agricultural regulations, hens... How do I reply to all that
Don't worry about my livestock purchasing. I'm abundantly aware of how work intensive livestock is having bred and raised three primates of my own in the last 6 years. I've had a motley crew of pets too in my youth (dogs, cats, pigeons, rats, a hare, various other rodents, arachnids, snakes, insects, fish.... And a goat, hens and almost an elephant - that was in Pakistan)... So I won't rush to buy anything. But I can dream meanwhile...0 -

You'd have to compromise much more than that if you went over to the 'Dark Side!'0 -
'Mypex' was the brand name for woven ground cover, which we stocked for over 20 years. As technology has moved forward we now offer AgroPro Premium (sample I sent you) which we consider to be a far superior product.
This material has a very tight weave and is extremely tough, it can withstand light vehicular traffic so should be able to withstand children and dogs
This is the reply I had back from the company, does it sound ok to you Dave?

Yes, there's only a fractional difference in weight between that & Mypex/Phormisol and the same sort of guarantee. Sounds OK.
Whether it is 'far superior' I wouldn't know, just like I don't know the company's mark-up on the two products!;)
I'd give it a try next time if there's a decent cost saving (or if you tell me it's great!)0 -
Well wish me luck. I'll get it sorted tonight.

Hi Rummer, is there a Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers anywhere near you? I used to belong to the one in Liverpool but had to give it up when I became ill as couldn't get to meetings at all.
Well worth going along to a few meetings, people are very enthusiastic and helpful to beginners and only too happy to advise on stuff like choosing a wheel. BTW you need to be very careful about buying a second hand wheel, even if seller says it's been overhauled. I wouldn't recommend eBay. If it's not well set up and balanced it makes it much more difficult to spin anything, let alone stuff you might want to use.
There's also an online Guild for those who can't get to meetings.
From fleece to fabric is hard. Lot of faffing especially washing and carding fleece. Hand carding is very hard work, though you can get electric carders (or some guilds may have stuff like that to hire out). Much easier to go for roving, especially when you're just beginning to spin. It takes forever to card just a small amount of wool, and then it spins up in a trice!
Must get to the Liverpool Guild if I can as have 2 wheels that need overhauling and I'm sure somebody there would have a use for them. One's an Ashford that I started to work on bringing it up to scratch around the time my parents first got ill, then with all the complications of life since I never finished it, though have the required parts.0 -
Oh, forgot to say it's worth going to the Merseyside Guild website and downloading the PDF on Textile Fibres. I remember Margaret Seagroat, its author well. She died while giving a talk on weaving, while singing (and dancing to) The Weaver's Song. Big loss to the Guild, but a good way to go for a weaver!0

Maggie, there is not really a guild close to me
although I will certainly have a look at their online info and the pdf you recommended. I think for me it will need to be a new wheel or a preloved one from a knowledgable source as it is too expensive a purchase for me to make a mistake with.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
How are you feeling maggie?0

Three rescue chook eggs, in the nest box and under the bottlesin the well......where they are meant to lay, I am very chuffed with that. Even more funny is that the welsummer, a cochin, and a leg bar are also sitting under milkbottles trying to push eggs out. I might put a score board up.0
