  • :D Honking geese are not the best of companions.
When I was young my uncle had geese on his farm. They had some sort of inbuilt radar which could pick my mother out at 200 yards. They'd come tearing round the corner of the yard, necks outstretched, honking like Paris taxis.
Mother could probably have successfully qualified for Team GB 100m sprint with those birds after her :rotfl:

in my opinion horses are not afraid of pigs persay. but OWNERS of young horses transfer tension because horses are supposed to be afraid !! the horse would be nervous of any animal that is only up to its knees and makes an unknown sound....sheep,dogs etc. my horses have had no problem with pigs [2 large viet pots wander past them all time] iv always said any animogs arent born with fear, they are taught it ....by thier own parents or us as owners. calm owners = calmer animals in my book. we as humans jump like hell if a large pig came out from nowhere and then we would be nervous of passing that "bush" again ????

hmm. I'd disagree slightly but not ntirely. Handlers definitly can transfer lack of confidence but I also think we teach them confidence as much as fear, and CRUCIALLY that prey animals have fear response for very sound reasons!

can i just say if i disapear offline its cos ive been flattened :D
it seriously sounds/feels like my roof is gonna go to the IOW for a late holiday break...
my chimneys stand 9ft above the roof line. [top pitch not off the side!:(] and my bedroom is in the line of fire as my bedroom ceiling goes up into the roof pitch too....
may be nice to have a quirky house but.................

p.s doesnt help that my dogs have decided to emit obnoxious deadly gasses...either fear or fun...im not sure but i cant even open the window or front door .............
  • I absolutely agree that riders can transfer fear but I've also known many experienced horsemen/women who have some horses which are fine & others that are totally paranoid when it comes to porkers. Maybe it's like crossing water? Familiarity normally overcomes fear unless it's gone way too far.

:):)oh i didnt mean we ONLY teach fear...i meant its up to us if we are owners [training etc] to boost an animals confidence in the correct way. if NOT then inadvertantly we teach them a fear. animals born react from a very early age to thier parents actions . one noise can send them to hide, they then visually connect noise to actions as they grow. from having my "bubs" over the years there is a huge difference between a 3day old to a 3 week old and even more as they pass the 6week old stage.[depends when i get them] an immense difference in thier reactions.
with domestic animals i feel we have to take over [ie a puppy, kitten] at such a crucial stage at 8/9 weeks old that this is the do or die to the animals future, alas too many people get them with no understanding of this [purely my opinion here] and end up with a "toy" that is broken....:(

Hmmm....it was obviously a bit nasty on the South Coast then!

I fell asleep shortly after my last post and heard nothing until someone kicked me out for snoring.:o Now, I'm wide awake, but it's only blowy outside, not manic.

Hope you were OK alfie. Our chimney is definitely suspect, but it's being rebuilt in a year or so.
  • flip what a wild night last night.....

even the dog was moaning to go out all night, and then as soon as the door was opened for him, he crossed his legs and ran back in..

I hope there wasnt too much damaged caused around the coountry last night...

still a bit rough out there, and it is calming right down..

Went to m&s yesturday to buy some bits to make up 2 hampers..... flipping heck:eek: the prices on some of their food was

and there were people filling their trollies... i would hate to see how much they had to pay:rotfl:

so i bought one of their half price ( £4.99) christmas cake, some chutneys, pickled beetroot, and one or two other bits, came to just over £16, but i had a £10 voucher, whitch lessened the sting...lol..
