how cheap is cheap? whethers or females? I never understood the draw myself, especially not at the prices they went for....more than ponies often enough!

We were only quoted for males @£100, but I would guess females could still go for 10x that. These weren't anything special. Very well bred types are silly money.

I would only consider them as fox deterrents..... expensive ones! :)

No, it's not very nice at all. When I had it there was extreme pain and swelling, but the good news is that it responds quickly to anti-inflammatories, like dichlofenac. Well, mine did. :D

If there is an infection in the joint, it will be like the 'orrible elbow I've just had. Again, that swells and feels very tender. With an infection, you would need antibiotics to fight the bugs from within, like one of the penicillin derivatives. My elbow's taken a week or so and it's OK, but not being weight-bearing, like a knee, I've been able to rest it a lot. :)

Local landowner bought a llama to protect against foxes, and it had a real presence even if you just went near the gate. Gamekeeper also got a kick in the sphericals when checking it over!

Sorry to hear about more ailments. Makes me recall my schooldays when you needed a sicknote to bunk off PE. PE teacher used to refer to the line up as "the lame, the sick and the lazy" glaring at some poor unfortunate as he snarled out "lazy".

Of the two plum tomato varieties we had bad blossom end rot with San Marzano plants, clear on the Roma plants and all other toms. Still picking in this mild weather, though getting some botrytis. Still, toms in November is better than last year:)

Saved some of the Roma seeds, and also some cucumber. After the garlic rust disaster earlier this year (that more than halved the crop) I'll start with fresh bulbs, some Solent Wight and for an experiment some Chinese garlic from LIDL in the veg section. They'll go in this week along with the Aquadulce Claudia broad beans.

Personally I have no problem with EATING horsemeat...no more than my chickens, or sheep or beef or whatever. I do have issues with long distance live transport and abbatoir protocol. But thats the same with whatever meat it is. If we were less squeamish about here we could be exporting high welfare horse meat which would be a better management of many of the free living UK equids, allowing some discernment back into the breeding stock and a really ethical meat source.

Its no weirder to me...even as a horse owner, than other meat is, and the alternative in existance to me is pretty shabby.

It's the haulage & also the welfare standards in Europe are awful, truly awful.

I know a guy who set up a community abbatoir on Shetland as it's not the easiest place to transport animals from.

Yep, agreed. I'd rather we slaughtered and butchered here then exported.
