The red ones really look like small plums, although OH says the are more tart than plums. The tees are really massive and very woody, and the fruit is clustered on the end of the branches the way apples are.
I can't see the picture but they sound like wild plums possibly. I know the yellow ones as Mirabelles, and this year I've found red versions too so do an image search on that and see if they look the same. They will only be tart if they are still slightly under ripe.Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

I've never seen red mirabelles, but they must be gorgeous!
Mirabelles are one of the best of the stone fruits imo. They make the most beautiful jam.
But yes, not tart when ripe...a ''taste'' but not sharp...when a little too ripe and on a warm day they are like a cleaner honey....sweet and warm and delicious. they fall quite quickly, and often on verges/sides of road. At which point I see them as fair game for nabbing and jamming. The tarter, less ripe ones would jam well too I think, probably a little better.

Well cannot tell the size from the photos, but given the ones I saw the other week, these are cherry plums. About the size of a cherry but have a plum stone. Some were erroneously exhibited as Morellos at Tatton. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

They're what I've always called Myrobalan plums, I think.

Well I only tasted the yellow and red ones. Yellow were sweeter than red but a bit less plummy. Both fine as straight eating fruit, healthy sweeties.
Might be a bit pippy in pies but ok for jams and preserves where you could skim off the pips.
They came from a section of hedging (likely to be as per Dave's link). If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
