The best time to buy a greenhouse or any stuff like that, is in the winter. Cheap then, although not so many for sale.

Not sure he does, as he's still putting up the polytunnel!

Got the doors done, thanks to FIL, and I've just finished concreting-in the door frames (in the dusk!) We found ourselves short of a component at lunchtime, so told the suppliers. The office woman wasn't very sympathetic, but as soon as I got hold of an engineer, all was well. "I'll have that in't post to you s'afternoon." :)

Once I get this poly sorted, I'll know whether I also want a greenhouse. I think I might, but it's something that may have to wait for a few years while more important stuff is done. ;)

    Hope you find something, lir.

New Forest Ponies? When I was nobbut a nipper saw one kick my elder brother in the stomach..been very wary ever since!

Anyhow the Beswick horse went on Sunday along with a fair bit of other stuff, maybe getting the balance of the offer a bit better, and stocked up on some more stuff at a local half price sale yesterday. Always a nice feeling knowing you are contributing a bit of extra cash each week into the family budget.

Down the M4 today to see GS2 and proud parents (lovely couple who have their heads screwed on just right!). Back home a walk round the garden reveals the cucurbits doing really well (something had to!) with the winter squash covering the compost heaps and adjacent shed...looks like quite a few squashes will enlarge and ripen, fingers crossed. Surprise for me is how productive marketmore cucs are, plenty over for bartering.

Dave, when do you sleeve the tunnel?

poop, didn't get the greenhouse. Alfie, I can't make the chooks homeless! I'm going to keep my eyes out though.

Problem is there is so much we need all the time, lol. Greenhouse probably comes below lawn mower atm!

Its freezing again today and the wind is back to moaning and keening.
its not the chook greenhouse...its another one .i have a big tarp over it, was going to board it as a shed but couldnt be a**ed in the end.

not sure what size it is think 8x6 so maybe not big enuf?

re New Forest Ponies...i constantly see parents allowing thier kids to try and stroke a pony and foal..whilst THEY stand back ??
i remember when i lived in beaulieu, a rather obnoxious lady was trying to get her child to "stroke the nice pony"..the child knew better and didnt want to.....the mother was almost bullying , i did say to her to be very carefull as mares with thier foals are VERY unpredictable....she told me in no uncertain terms that "they are used to people touching them and to butt out"...i watched as she tried to "pat" the mare which promptly turned on a sixpence and as she tried to move away it caught her neatly with both hind hooves on HER butt! sending her flying..... at that point i "butted out" :D:D:D

Question: howmany of the daydreamers shoot and keep either rifles or even airguns.

I have been shooting a coupole of times WAY back....probably only a couple of times since a student. Not really thinking as a recreation, but mainly as vermin control. We get a few partridge and pheasants, but not enough to want to shoot them here, and tbh, people seem to want to give me pheasants all the time....and I don;t even like them very much!

Errr....we have to wait for a warm windless day, after we've got all the woodwork on. We also need to time this perfect day with the availability of willing helpers!

In addition to the doorframes, there's about 260' of side and end rails to attach. At present we're half way through that. Besides those big rails, there's about the same length of battens (to create rebates) which will need nailing on, so there's a way to go yet. We're having netting over the first 0.9m from ground level and that must also be fixed before the polythene.

The site still slopes a bit, despite us 'levelling' it, so the bottom rails on one side have a gap of up to 20cm under them. Then, the land falls away. On that side, I've used heavier concrete piers to hold the frame in place. We intend to fill the gap by clamping dung boards to that side and then bring a good few tonnes of top soil back from the field to get closer to a level interior overall.

It's a big job. Without family assistance, it would have taken the two of us months more to complete. I still think it will take us well into September. I'd rather go slowly and try to evaluate things as they arise, because I'm not good with spatial planning, but others want to go faster. I find that stressful, so ATM some of the joy has gone out of it for me. :(

I had an air rifle as a 11 year old, and I was pretty handy with it.
Now, I live less than half a mile from a shooting ground, but the concept of blowing little bits of clay out of the sky just leaves me cold. It's like match fishing, which I also don't understand. (I won the only match I ever entered, so I retired, unbeaten!:rotfl:)

I agree about pheasants. People give them away. We have a brace in the freezer now and I can't remember where they came from, or why. They're OK.

I thought I'd need a gun here to deal with rabbits, but the local cats do that. There's no real need to have a gun ATM.

Bought an air rifle as a kid and shot a bird. Made me feel so guilty I never used it again. But if I had a rifle I'd feel no guilt at shooting a rat, and, if civil disorder worsened, to protect my family.

Still got building works either side but should have new neighbours in a few weeks. Will be nice to see them, and we wont miss the hassle and mess caused by the builders!

Dave, fair bit to go yet! At least Sept is normally one of the best weather months of the year, so maybe you'll get your ideal conditions.

We had a galvanised trough for our chooks food but started to get lots of rats visiting. Now suspending a feeder from the roof of the run and rats no longer evident and feed is lasting longer :)
