Lir, the shape you have there sacrifices growing space to pathways, but that might not be important, as it's a large area ayway and you aren't short of space. I presume the semi/circles are there to turn barrows easily. The only bits I wouldn't do are the pointy ones which will be difficult to use and might look odd.

This reminds me of when we first went into business. We teamed up with another couple, who offered to set up the nursery on their property and to pay for the landscaping etc. DW spent time devising a plan that would allow for maximum ease of movement and a logical way of setting out the plants, but when it was built, it was an intricate design more like a maze, with wiggly bits everywhere. When the gravel was laid, and turned out to be lovely round slippy stuff, which skidded every time anyone walked on it. At that point, I predicted our business relationship would probably not last long... Yup!;)

Your design is practical, but circles are harder to build. What material would you use?

What a weekend of finds for you, rhiwfield! I'm sure that whatever you & alfie find out, those sets will be worth far more than you paid.

As predicted, we had a few finds at the Plant Fair yesterday, but we only spent half of what we earned the day before, and we sold another dozen tomatoes while we were out. :)

Davesnave, above design was an alternative to the more obvious one of a series of rectangular beds, which I'd do with central path and access paths at right angles. To me that would prob be the most practical design, not the one above.

But with some tweaking it might look ok on the ground and I'd got the feel Lir was after something slightly different from the usual layout. Lir's got quite a bit of ground to play and the circles were meant to be focal points, perhaps with the middle circle having a statue/feature -well it does sound a posh place ;)

You're right, I AM looking for something that will look ''different'', or rather...pleasing :) More parterre than my grandad's straight rows on an undivided big ploughed plot in his back garden. Though I wish Grandad were still about: he grew good honest non fancy veg every year. Mainly I think, he grew stuff that was used for making ghastly ''wine'' and potatos. IIRC my grandmother mainly cooked using frozen veg!

Rather than statues, big pots of permanent things that need funky soil....blueberries, might make good focal points ;) Its not that posh!

That's a good base to work from.

Davenave, for sides I have more breezeblocks (we've sort of dry stone walled them for the long bed) and I also have sleepers, though not sure about relinquishing them...atm they are walls in the barn!

Weather watch: so the rain threatened last night and to help it along I plugged the sprinkler in....but nothing. The wind is strong and cold, and drying, and the skies are grey but no rain. Local radio said it will be a dry week with a scorcher net weekend.

My grass (''lawns'' not field) is looking really ratty now, haven't cut it for a couple of weeks, but its wispy long bits, not mormal thick grass overgrowth.

Found four eggs in a nettly patch this weekend but god knows where they are laying atm, one a day is not good enough! (ven accounting for the one I know lays in the hay so two a day) Tomorrow I'll take Seymour's advice and leave them locked in till late morning/midday. I should be getting eggs a plenty ATM.

Problem with rogue eggs is not just not getting them its that something else is. The feral cats I don't mind having the occasional egg, poor wee souls, but I want no excuse fr the badgers or foxes to come closer for food because it risks them being a nuisance in ways they aren't atm. And while they aren't they are fine.

we have coots and coot -babies (cotlings?) on the pond. They are very shy but I'm taking stuff down every day to eat. Maybe they'll get braver in the future. So long as they are safe its fine. :)

It's rained every day for ages here - could do with a few dry ones to get on with stuff! But LiR I feel your pain - rain was ages arriving here, and now we want it to go! <shrug>

What we really want is a good day in London on the 28th for DD1's wedding.

Little chick passed away - never managed to sucesfully intervene in a hatching. Two chicks taken from Mother hen & put in brooder as Mum couldn't quite cope/cover them all - ( I'd added two to her) Mum knew best. I shouldn't have tried to meddle - at least I watched the situation closely & realised it was a mistake.

Goodness - what rain! Thought the bridge was away in the all day deluge - making up for all the dry weeks.
Neighbour came down with more scaffolding for the weekend push - so that's a start. Poor guy, the caravan is such a mess after ebay frenzy & just living in a caravan with chicks & stuff & life - kept him outside in the rain, he's busy guy & didn't seem to notice - phew......

The clouds right down & still raining.
