At last, the wind went around to the south west today, so I was able to burn off some of the stuff we've had stored in dumpy bags, drying off. Much of it was just leylandii trimmings from the neighbour's hedge, and the top of the one on the end, which nearly got away. Leylandii burns rapidly when it's dry, so I was able to mix quite a lot of other nonense with it, like all the nettles we've exhumed while planting the 80' beech hedge.
The hedge is where Mr Mole is ATM, travelling happily down between the double row. It's my fault really, because I put in barrowloads of pig muck....chock full of worms....! Doh! Glad you got yours Lotus. I expect mine to be equally well-fed.
Our marigolds are coming along well too, though they're not all pricked out. I just grew them from last year's companion plants. The Real Seeds early vine toms are romping away, so I'm hopeful of a crop in June.
Take it steady alfie, and others; there's more spring and a whole summer ahead of you.0 -
Wow Rhiwfield I am impressed at your patience!
Woken up feeling dreadful today, just as well I am going to the docs. No chance of getting out in the garden today anyway as it is pouring with rain and I have a few appointments.
Hope the sun is shining wherever you are!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I may not be making much progress out of doors (!!!!!! this earning a living lark), but I did spend a peaceful 45 minutes at lunchtime reading the Strawbridges book in a bookshop, as I managed to get one of the 4 comfy seats there (I almost never get one, and sit cross-legged on the floor usually).
I think I might invest in this one though, as it seems pretty instructive but in a "bodge it up yourself" kinda way. But not until at least next month when I get the regular acounts back under control (DH's compo is nowhere near coming through yet, and I am way out of whack after his accident and the building work, so I need to get things sorted again). Oh well, I have €10 to put towards it if I buy before the end of May from their loyalty scheme (stamp for every €10 of books bought, 8 stamps means €10 off next purchase - and I am a book lover! New cards come out every 1st June).
Too windy to contemplate outdoors today anyway. And there still hasn't really been any rain - we had a sprinkling yesterday morning which dampened the ground, but the rain butt is almost empty and the garden needs lots of watering, so I dread to think how the seeds and plants on the plot are doing (cos I couldn;t even water those properly when I was there as the taps weren't turned back on yet). I might see if I can take tomorrow afternoon off and just disappear up there for a while ...GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

Treated myself to this the other day, never know if you can learn something new.
Been labelling the surplus toms and peppers for the car boot next week, hopefully shift a few marigolds as well! Lidl's ice cream cartons cut up make pretty good labels, white with no printing on. Got a gooseberry and some leeks, chives, sunflowers and sweet peas as well as the usual household stuff thats spare. May also cut some rhubarb for sale as its doing really well.
Had about half an inch of rain and its pretty windy, but sun breaking thru and nice to be outside0 -

Almost like March, isn't it?Maybe after the rabbits and hares of tonight and the morning we'll get a GYO friendly spate of little April showers.
I'm grateful for the rain, for the plants. But I noticed something at the weekend, a sign more people are getting into GYO, the weather reader said ''You'll be pleased to hear there is some rain coming next week''. Now, five years ago people would have written in to complain about pleasure and rain being associated.:rotfl:
Its drying up under the sun that's trying to come out here too. If it dries enough I'll fling the lawn mower around later.0 -
spiting with rain here still and very glum, have soom marigolds, toms and pepers who need potting on, so hopefully will dry up abit later, or i may have to do it in the kitchen
made a right mess last time i did this though lol and im not sure where im going to put them all as the mini plastic green house is full so are my window stills
any ideas on a postcard please0 -
Rummer - hope you feel better soon - another soldier down!
Poured down all night - hammered on the roof like gravel & still pouring down, so I'm pleased as I don't feel like doing a thing & it's always easier to loll indoors if it's disgusting out!0 -
I'd wait until I get home if I could, but could someone please divert some of that wet stuff this way? We haven't had any really since they called the general election - and the new guys are in power 3 weeks now!!GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

We had some brilliant rain last night, not sure how much, maybe half an inch like rhiwfield, but then it's all dried out today, so it's a beautiful place to be working.
Working with the lovely soil I have in most of the beds now, makes me realise just how bad it was when I moved in, because whenever I dig a new bed, or incorporate a bit more into one, the soil just can't be worked most of the time, either rock hard, or muddy mess.
Now I can work on the beds any time I want.
I wish I could move in again, with my new found knowledgeFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
It was dry enough for grass....I got most of the front grass done, about another 20 mins worth left but have to plug in from a barn for that not the house.. I suppose I should think abut verges soon too....Leave the snow drops greenery fr a bit longer though I think. I'll hopefully finish up tomorrow.
The back where I reseeded has not taken well. I was kind of lazy about seeding, and it really, really shows. Not too worried as we're having trenches dug again soon for structural evaluation (tree roots, subsidence footings etc) so not worth getting worried till that is done I guess.
If I can work out how to get an imagine into this computer I'd appreciate feed back about garden design and veg garden design soon. I just can't work out how to do that yet.
When can I move irises safely? The ones we put in a nursery bed dug out have a ''forever'' place ready for them, but they are growing away now, so I guess it would be stupid to move them now? Even if I move a big chunk of earth with them? It seems tortuous to wait till the end of summer though!0
