oooo thats a posh wood store.....That thing!!:eek::eek:
Bit happier with this one.
Just think that our house and garden have to work for us, not just shelter but as a contributor of food, energy, water as well. And we leave a bit of room for ornamentals, though I love just as much the sight of apple blossom and the sweet peas flowering amongst the scarlet emperor beans.
mine is four strong fence panels with stakes wacked in to hold em up , a couple of long wood struts across roof with corrugated on top... it actually started to "lean" last winter and had to be rescued...realised it was only the wood inside that was holding it all together!! as i emptied it so it emulated the leaning tower of pisa !!0 -

All your pics have been very inspiring! We only burn wood here in the summer when OH explores his caveman side and he and his friends sit round a fire in the garden exchanging manly stories. Many of you talk about seasoning wood, what does that mean?
I gave in and got more seeds today, just need to smuggle them into the seed tin when they get here without getting caught as I have told my OH no more!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
i may be buying something on ebay that is going to COST ...BUT still a bargain if under my max.... im buying on behalf of my friend, for me to use !!?? will know tmorow eve so will let you know if im succesfull !! bit random i know but to do with horses !!0

well my version is that you have to leave wood to season ,dry out enough to burn without tarring up your chimney !! and also to produce heat/flame as opposed to smouldering damply, stinking and no heat !! im sure there are much better explanations than mine but i leave mine 9 months to a year from green. All your pics have been very inspiring! Seeing Lotus Eaters wood store is a bit like going to the gents, looking enviously to your side and telling yourself, size doesnt really matter!!!
But it does of course
Rummer, a log burner in winter is just heavenly. As Alfie says, seasoning is letting the sun and wind dry out the wood so the moisture content gets below 25%, or 20% even better. Gives out more heat without tarring so much. You can buy moisture meters or just look at the wood end grain, see if its well split thru drying and just weigh it in your hand, the lighter the better

That's true but different woods weigh differing amounts, wet and dry.see if its well split thru drying and just weigh it in your hand, the lighter the better
Tbh, most of the stuff I have I remember exactly where I got it from, what it is and from that, can work out what it should weigh/look like dry.... but I still have a moisture meter
very useful.
I probably have 10+ or so different types of wood atm, so even I sometimes get a bit lost, what exactly is what.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

That's why we have oil heating toowow there is so much forward planning required
Flick a switch darling.
But after what we just paid for 1000 litres, I think it's cheaper to buy kiln dried oak and burn that.
