MrsM - I know just how you feel about the Yankee candles - I'm down to my last one from germany - I had about 10 all packed away and they all got broken apart from one and it is about 2/3 gone. I love to sit at night with the candle glowing away nicely. I love that they are called housewarmer candles as they really do make me feel cosy and warm, not to mention smell nice.

I've started saving the old bits that melt at the side so I can re-melt it all down and make a "new" candle . Moneysaving at its worst! I already do it with bars of soap - you never knoe when you come to mine what the soap will look like lol. But it all saves the pennies and things being what they are its the pennies that matter just now for all of us. So I have told my mum, hubby, dad, best friends etc that its candles for me - I got one from hubby's ex girlfriend for christmas which was rather nice of her. She lives across the road from us with hubby's oldest daughter, but at least we all get on quite well. I think its apple so it will make for an interesting candle when that one is used up as well!

On the gardening front, not much got done this weekend as we took the kids to a fete yesterday. They spent their day drumming and playing the games. And have managed to get spotted by the local newpaper photographer so we have to buy the paper this week as DD1 is in twice and DD2 will be in once! Stars in the making!!! But got some good tips for bird feeders and there was a council rep there who said that there are some new recycling initiatives on trial and hopefully they will soon be rolled out throughout the city.

Hope you are all enjoying the weather and that you had a good weekend. xx

Another busy weekend on the allotment for us! I managed to persude DS2 and DS3 to accompany us. So with hubby and 8 yr old grandson that made a working party of five. Well, hubby was "supervising" but it's the first time he's been down there since his op so it was good to get him out into the fresh air.

Between us we planted the last 40 brassica plants and put hoops over them ready for netting this week. Grandson weeded his plot then I helped him plant his sweetcorn plants (toffee flavoured of course!). ;)

DS2 and I started weeding the paths between the beds. It's never ending, but once hubby is back at work we'll be able to do someting a bit more permanent with them.

DS3 had a much more interesting job to do. He strimmed all the paths around the outside of our plot. Then he carried on and did many of the paths around the whole site. Our dear friend was the allotment manager but he was sadly killed in an accident three weeks ago. Although DS3 is only 21 he felt we all ought to pull together to keep the place tidy.

I'm off sick this week as things have finally taken their toll on me. I've been down to the allotment again for two hours this morning and our plot is really beginning to take shape. It makes me feel so much better when I've been for a wee dig! :D

One of my savings accounts matures next month so half will buy us an allotment shed and the other half will go in my fund!

  • Hi everyone

Well I listed tons of books on greenmetropolis at the weekend plus photograped loads of them in groups for ebay. O/H has rebuilt the computer so hopefully won't take me so long now to list things!

Made an apple pie yesterday as well out of the apples mother-in-law gave us last year which were in the freezer! Trying to remember to get things out of there from time to time instead of using fresh food.

stitchy - don't eek you look lovely! I'm soooo jealous I can't sew to save myself because if I could I would make one of those it looks so lovely. glad to hear hubby is on the mend - hope all is well with you both.

well I have officially applied for a job as a parliamentary assistant to our local member of the scottish parliament. he is SNP as well and i'm keeping fingers, toes and eyes crossed! the closing date is friday so should hopefully hear next week as interviews are being held in the last week of the month.

no gardening done today - tomorrow I will be getting out and getting dirty!!! hubby is now officially signed off with depression due to a lot of stuff so i'll be getting him out to help me as the fresh air will help him loads.

spent most of the morning in town so must really get on with the housework that didnt get done - so off to sort out screaming kids and tidy the house.

will be back later on xxx

Cant understand how I never saw this wonderful thread before....too old to aim for a small holding, have an acre here although there are lots of stone sheds so not all clear for gardening. There is always something to spend money on to keep a house that is 200 years old from falling apart, OH is currently making noises that the windows need something done to them, but my first goal would be a nice 10ft square conservatory to serve as a front porch, there is a tiny one at present but not big enough to turn around in, never mind use as a place to have lots of plants!

So starting a 'pot' for porch, no idea how much I need.

welcome marie!!! everyone here is really nice and supportive and i'm sure i'm addicted to coming on here every day!!!

as to today. hubby took all 3 kids to school. DD2 in her primary 1 class today and tomorrow meeting her new teacher, DD1 looking forward to it too as she gets extra time in the computer area! SD off to high school as she stayed the night last night ... she spends more time here than at home - i'm sure she is biding her time before she asks to move in permanently!!! but she is great with the little ones and a really good girl so i've no problem with it.

hubby has attempted to cut down all the overgrown weeds at the side of the house. got half way thru it and came inside knackered! so off to plant out some seedlings that i acquired thru freecycle. have emailed a guy about a bike too so i can try to get fit!!!

anyhow gotta go and get DD1 from school then off to do more housework and gardening!

speak to you all soon xxx

    Hi...all

well i honestly dont know where the time is going, gorden bennett it will be christmas before i know it:rolleyes:

went to the farm auction, and bought some more chickens and ducks, and had a good day selling my things....ended up with around £35:j

now i really do need to write things down or get a spreadsheet going, as i have been jiggering some money around to take full advantage of the lloyds vantage account interest rate. so will update sig later, which even suprised me, but 3k of it might have to go back into my business account if needed later on, if not its bulk wages:D

So now that i have my savings head on.. i didnt realise how addictive saving is, i have even put off paying my council tax and water rates until the very last minute, as i dont want to spend my money...

Hello, been a bit busy with 'life' -mainly other people's lives  - so haven't said much for a few days.

I know what you mean about keeping records of where everything is, money wise. I'm hopeless at spreadsheets, but I have charts that plot where cash is, what the interest rate is and when deals end etc. I've done this since we actually had some 'spare' money for the first time, through inheritance, a few years ago. Since then, we've also had the money from the sale of our house & lump sums from various pensions, so there are rather a lot of accounts out there; over 20 anyway. That's a lot of numbers and passwords too!

Thanks to MSE Savings & Investments Board, we've actually made money while sitting here & renting. Nice, but there's no substitute for doing real things rather than filling time, waiting for something to happen. The plant sales helped there, but they're over for now.

Yes, thanks, the property purchase seems to be moving along, though our solicitor is much more on the ball than the other party's. I took the trouble to find an agricultural specialist, rather than the dotty lady I've always used in the past. She may have been OK and cheap, but I wanted someone in the area who deals with farms etc all the time. He actually asks me to contact him on Mondays & Fridays - that's a first for a solicitor!:rotfl:

Somewhat envious of all you folk, with your veg growing away nicely & your chooks. I do have some troughs of salad and one courgette plant! Ah, but next year.....

Have a nice day. Weather looks better towards the end of the week.:D

    Morning all :D

Its overcast and damp here again... we have had about 3 days of this now....so could really do with some sun-things should really romp on then, what with the steady supply of water they have been getting
Everything seems to be going ok out there -I have flowers on my 1st lot of short peas :j a few tiny tomatoes on, and loads of flowers on my cucumbers -but no fruits yet ...

oooh it sounds like things are moving on nicely DavesNave :Twait until next year when you are growing on a grand scale ;)

Triker-ohhhhh yes I have a serious problem spending anything :rotfl: ... At one time I never would have been able to say that ;) -but now Im addicted to saving every little cent I can :p...
All of our out goings are taken DD so the only money I "phsically" get in my little mitt is the house keeping -so all of the dream fund savings so far have been rescued from that -oh and the bits extra when hubby wins some and gives me half ;).....
As of this month most of my housekeeping is going to go into my UK account so I can get some built up there -I have nearly €4000 here -so I figured its time to start building some up back home. I think that when we go home to visit at xmas Im going to get hubby to open up a joint savings account so we can get some saved that way too -will look better if we end up going for a bigger mortgage as I don't work so it will be hubbies finances they look into....
right enough waffle again..will get off and get some x-stitching done -hope everyone has a great week :D

    :D

You're right about the mortgage co. of course, but don't forget hubby will have to pay tax on his half. Now if you held all of it..........Well, it's a consideration!

I've given DW as much money as I can, without the interest exceeding her personal tax allowance. I worked out that we'd save £300-£400 p.a. in tax doing it that way.:D

Mind you, by August, all that will have changed. She'll keep whatever we've still got outside of ISAs though. Useful, penniless OHs! :rotfl:
