Just to confirm, besides the Verm X, we use the apple cider vinegar too.

I was taking it myself for aches and pains at one stage, but I seem to be free of those now, so either it worked, or I just got fitter. :)

You use Verm X on yourselves?

Well, if I did, it's organic, so probably OK. :)

Anyway,I'm not the only one writing ambiguously :p:

And while you're thinking about that ( :) ) am I doing right by using fresh garlic cloves crushed in water for internal parasites, a couple in normally but 5 cloves every six weeks or so?

will try that...is it ok for ducks and geese tho as they are all together??
I used garlic when I had ducks and they never complained :D

I too use garlic and cider vinegar, I don't use anything else. I'd like to know the real effectiveness too.

Always worth having a wee read through the clinical research if you are interested.

Yes, haven't myself, but friends have and their opinion of it puts me off. They are not parasitologist though.

Shame....I think their would be a niche for that kind of ork.

I take cider viegar sometimes. But when I've tried with the chooks they opt for pure water instead. which makes me feel mean leaving it as the only alternative.

Lir, ours don't have the choice :). I suspect they are so used to it by now that they prefere it to just water!

Lotus-Eater, its strange that most of us are using garlic and/or vinegar as supplements when we dont know the efficacy. Yet garlic is supposed to be a potent antiviral and an antibiotic while ACV seems to be a cure all. I've seen no studies on it, though plenty of references on poultry forums, the only Google scholar ref was this patent application

when I were a lass.....horses and dogs were fed garlic a lot...now studies suggest it ain't that great. My guess is there are always going to be some studies suggesting things both ways.

we add spice to food and sometimes verm x spice alternative...can't think of the name.

I have wromed with verm x but.....not sure about relying on it from friends (animal scientists) opinions (though none have done studies and they critique the studies not the product).

I kind of end up going with my gut: if they's eat it themselves in alife without me they can have it....now, my horses would be unlikely to root up garlic, but if they found a carrot on the soil they'd be in there. Similarly lot of people won't feed apples as a complimentary feed stuff now...but you know....mine never walk PAST an apple tree....so...why not...in moderation...no cider drunk ponies for me thanks! Simialarly when we reseed here we'' be reseedin with proper meadow mixes, not single/dual variety food production seed mixes:its interesting and informative to see what they pick out for themselves.

Parasite control I do by being as clean as we reasonably can...brushing under feed areas daily and letting them free range....or if you pen then moving runs....

If I couldn't do this I think I'd stick with proper anthelmintics you know...personally.

Away from the little beasties and off to the veg plot :D

Just been to wilkos again after dropping off DS2 at college for teacher training.

Bought 3kg each of Maris Peer and Rocket (£2.98 each), 500g of Sturon (£1.38) and a replacement pair of Dunlop wellies (£8.97).

Dry feet, new potatoes for June-Sept and all year maincrop onions.

    Sorted :)

Edit: Just got to grow them :o

So that would be Flubenvet, but we'd have to withdraw eggs from sale for a time if we used that. :(

I use Flubenvet - especially when getting new hens - as you never know.

I think you are thinking of Poultry Spice LIR - I have that but forgot about it. We just had a power cut this morning.

Yes, but verm -x do a sort of ''conditioning pellet'' as well as wormer...or wormer incorporated...which I thn of as an alternative to spice.

Something I am always aware of with horses is people pay £8-12 quid a sack for a balanced feed appropriate to the needs of their horses...the proceed to UNBALANCE it...by mixing with other types of feed they like the sound of, and various conflicting additions. Part of what you pay for is the nutritionalists' time and thought and testing on these mixes...so adding half a scoop of this, and 3/4 scoop of that is a bit of an own goal often.

I'd like to feed the deluxe chook pellets, for he reason that the chances are the nutritionists have spent some time getting it right...but at more than doublt the bog standrad ones its hard to justify. Specially when you consider that 7 year old hen laying well on the bog standard.
