I've had quite a lazy day too. Went round counting the number of baby trees needed where more hedging is required, but stopped at 180, realising that I'll not plant more than that in a winter! I can source elm for the garden hedge and I'm going to fill in the roadside gaps with beech. At the moment that's a mish-mash of quickthorn, ash, oak and a few other things. We should be able to grow on a few of the oaks as proper trees. Topping out the rest will result in a lot of firewood. :D

Thinking about the hedges, I've reluctantly decided to buy a chain saw, and all the safety gear that goes with it. One season working on the roadside hedge will pay for it, both in wood and in not employing someone else. I will still get Pete to help with the tough stuff though. The thing is, when we employ others, they go for maximum speed, which is right, as they're on an hourly rate, but if I were cutting the wood, I'd save much more and waste less in bonfires.:)

Went to a local garden centre today and bought a couple of their sale plants for silly money, and a nice Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' to go on Eric the ferret's grave. It will be in bloom around the time we lost him. It will also provide numerous cuttings.....in fact, it already has! ;)

We're very fire safe for somewhat horrific personal reasons but we do use fire...open fires and candles. To be there is something very ''spiritual'' and primordial about flame and I find it somewhat ''necessary''.

We had our first house wrecked by fire a year after we were married. As we weren't responsible, it's never haunted us, though we check things pretty carefully before going out!

We were home-less for 6 months, and although it was literally a baptism by fire into the world of project management, loss adjusters and building specialists, we emerged from it all with a 'new' house and much more knowledge, mainly about people and how you sometimes have to 'deal' with them.

    Stuff happens. :(

Well I've listed half a dozen items & it's taken me a few hours - Gosh I'm slow but getting quicker. I've started to get pretty adventurious - Well I hope I get bidders & they bid more than 99p.

House fires are a scary thought. Where we used to live someone had a house burnt to the ground not long after moving in & we let them use a mini chalet/shed thing we had while they got something more suitable sorted out.
The stove had been put into an ordinary flu & was a big pipe going into a smaller pipe behind wood lining - they were lucky to get out & to have arranged insurance.

I don't like the scented candle/burner stuff as I read about the chemicals in some & how they are thought by some to lead to epilepsy in cats. Although I do use the cheap night lights to help get the kindling in the stove going sometimes.

Quite few hail showers & pretty cold out there so cowering in again. I'm seizing up.
Looks like we'll be able to get out on Tuesday if you believe the forecast, hope so as I'm getting cabin fever again.

Choille, you dont want to know weather here atm. But its going to rain tomorrow.

Went to wilko to get Rocket spuds, 3 shelves all sold out!!

Farmers wife has recommended putting Vick on tail feathers of pecked hen. Failing that she thinks she has some anti peck clips and will try to sort some out.

Realised that the pots in the greenhouse need watering, deliberately kept them dryish to avoid mould but maybe I went a bit too far :o

Tried posting earlier, but when i pressed the submit button it went awol...lol..

my head is in a right whirlwind at the mo..... also feels like i am dangling by a bit of thread, in limbo land..:rotfl:

on the 'push comes to shove' thread that our rhiwfield started, someone mentioned an old book called 'make your garden feed you'

so i just bought it on amazon for 1p plus the p&p.

I love books like that, had quite a few a while back, but i sold them to put money in the daydream pot, sorry i did now...lol...

Trying to use up things in the freezer and cupboards, to save a bit of money... so just defrosted a very small piece of beef that will end up as beef and veg curry, defrosted another small piece which will make a beef dinner for tonight, or sandwiches tomorrow...

right off to chop some onions:eek::rotfl:
