Oh great :( Now the decrepit septic tank that we were allowed to stay hooked up t for a year is backing up. :( No bath, no washng, no dishes...and er....no good that the loo isn't frozen. Its only been used by us, which means of course, mainly me, for six months, and was emptied befor that. It used to have the waste from the farm and the neighbours farms going into it, so I had hoped it would last just us till our sewage treatent thing went in. Another unwante and should have been in necessary bill and mini crisis.

    Oh no

I found a wee heap of fruit bush canes that I bought last year, is there any point in trying to plant them or will they be dead beyond recovery?
plant away... down the road from me in the corner of a field has/is dumped all the "old stock" from a local pick your own farm... i trundle down with my wheelbarrow "taking the dogs for a walk!!" and rescue allsorts, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries etc... i heel them in somewhere then distribute them when i have "a plan"... they look dead as a dodo but all revive? they seem as tough as old boots... i even found a chopped up reject yukka plant, took home ,stuck bits randomly around the garden...they are huge now!! about 3-4ft high and 3ft across and flower! [after 3 yrs]. i got a whole load of plants the other week from a local roundabout being re planted. winter pansies etc.
i HATE to see plants discarded. i have a trade access at a wholesale nurserie a few miles away. i trek round looking for despondant plants then ask if i can " rescue them".... i get them for pence... best was two 8ft tall wisterias [the canes were broken so they looked all scrumpled!] for £2 each.... never say die !!

LIR - Why is it not working?

Septic tanks are brilliant but they don't like anything biological, it stops them working - soap powder etc has to be non-bio. Condoms are the worst thing you can put down the loo for making them back up. Not that I'm saying you have been........errr, just not many people know that!

Hi Alfie - I'm gonna be monitoring when the sun actually pokes over the ridge - then I'll dance around in the bare naked......not, but I may have a little bonfire if it's not horizonatal rain as it is just now.

Tried pulling my beetroot - it's tiny, like marbles - not worth the effort. I also went an emptied an old beer bucket that I'd planted tatties in late on & I got about 5 smallish. egg-sized spuds out - so not doing too well on that front either. Still it's mild, but plenty of water running about the place.

I dunno. It was owne by the council and the council farms ...hence we were still hooked up to it....but its been dodgy for years apparently, so the council gave all the people on it sewage treatment plants and a condition of our purchase is that we do the same before this summer...we wanted it in this summer but the guy was too slo...then wanted to wait till spring. I use non bio, I'm septic tank friendly (spent more of my life on tank than off it!) and this must be a huge tank if it had more than one farm on it :( I can't believe I've filled it.:o:o

may not be the same but i found that rain water from my gutters was going into my sceptic tank and that was why it kept filling up...
iv now got water butts under every down pipe and it now needs emptying half as often....

Our gutters go into our surface water drains into our (now unused) slurry pond,so we actually have a clean water reservoir! That doesn't been though, that no water it getting into the tank. My guess is the pipe work is not great (and pretty sure its will be old clay so might have collapse points) We have found very shallow clay pipe runs (at a worrying angle, i.e. not a great rate of ''drop'')somewhere, so guess the rest is the same (though it didn't freeze so must have been draining until very recently).

:( The works in spring mean we'll come of it, but means we'll need to have tank emptied AGAIN, instead of just once when we change systems. and more money, and discomfort till I can get someone out. It seems we have last minute panics all the time ATM and its a bit draining. (and I just kicked myself for the unintended pun)
