I don't think she actually advocates second-hand undies. This is part of an essay on 'selective squeamishness'.She once spoke at a chat show about doing things like scraping the burnt bits of a cookie off and eating the rest,or saving an apple that a child had taken one bite out of.All perfectly reasonable things to do,you would think. But the chat show audience apparently thought they were gross  .Amy went on to point out that you don't take your own sheets to a hotel, you trust the hotel to launder adequately. On the subject of second-hand undies, she pointed out that many people have relationships with more than one partner,so,aside from moral objections, how was that different from wearing well-laundered second-hand underwear. She does say she has never used second-hand underwear. The essay is on page 415 of the completes edition.

I couldn't help myself. After reading this thread from the beginning I feel like I'm missing out on something. :D I have to read it. :whistle:I've ordered it in from our local Library. They didn't have it so it's coming from another library. Should be here next week. Big mistake really, as I have so much packing to do the last thing I need is to have my nose in the book. It may have some packing/moving tips. ;) You never know.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

If I remember correctly, (few years since I've read it), although AmyD didn't purchase 2nd hand undies herself, she did speak about swapping undies, as in bra's?
The reason it made me chuckle so much is because at around that time, my dd had noticed that there were (and still are!) 2nd hand undies on sale in charity shops and had   which let to a discussion on AmyD's take on undies/bed sheets etc. ;)

While we both agreed it wasn't for us, we couldn't fault AmyD's logic on the subject.

My dd then decided to take a peek at the book herself and had a good chuckle of the use of human hair to deter deer - as she pointed out, "We don't have any wild deer!"
So I replied, "Obviously works then" ;)

    sure thing!

    Potato Refrigerator Dough

1 tbsp dry yeast (or 1pkt)
    1 1/2 C warm water (lukewarm)
    1C Unseasoned mashed potato
    2/3 C Sugar
    2/3 C Butter or Margerine
    2 Eggs
    1 1/2 tsps salt
    6-7 C flour

disolve yeast in warm water, stir in potatoes sugar, butter, eggs salt and 3 cups of flour. beat til smooth. then mix in enough flour to make a dough easy to handle
turn on to lightly floured surface and ,knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes) place in a greased bowl making sure that the top of the dough gets lightly greased as well.
cover bowl tightly and refrigerate AT LEAST 8 hours but NO LONGER than 5 days. Bake at 400F (200C/Gas Mark 6)

simply take as much dough as you want at one go, this makes enough to bake quite a few things during the course of the week.

this is the recipe from the cookbook she mentions (can't remember off hand, think it's the betty crocker recipe book) so it's 'the real thing' so to speak :T

I've been thinking abou ttrying this since seeing it a few days ago and being inspired as to how to use up the big bag of Smash i've got in the cupboard.

    I wasn't sure about the amounts though - I'm guessing it's all in Cups? 1 Cup = 250ml?

    Would it convert to (approx)

    1tbsp yeast
    375 ml Water
    8oz mashed potato
    6oz sugar
    6oz butter
    2 eggs
    1.5 tsp salt
    erm....flour....6 or 7 cups? 3.5lb flour?

Is that right???? It seems a lot!!!:confused::confused:

Cups work by volume and not by weight - so a cup full of sugar weighs more than a cupful of flour.

    To get the volume right:-

    A M E R I C A N C U P S
    ====================

As for cups - the americans work by volume rather than weight.

You can usually buy plastic cup sets in pretty much any supermarket - but for recipes that are ALL cups you just need to use any old cup or mug you like, and as long as you use THAT mug for all the ingredients the proportions will work out fine.

In the meantime - an american cup is 240mil and a european one is 250mil

Hardly worth bothering about the difference.

To get quantities right for a recipe that's one cup of something and everything else in in tablespoons etc there's a way to sort this out.

Put a mug or glass on your scales (glass is better 'cos you can mark it) and zero them. Now add water until the scales show 250grams. This is where you can stick a bit of label or sticky tape on the outside of this glass to mark the water level.

    THAT is one cup

Just dry the glass off and fill it with flour or sugar (whatever) to that level and your recipe will be right.

If you happen to have a smaller glass or tumbler that comes to about 250 when full it's even easier

  • oh blimey......not sure I'm going to get this one right......so when i've marked my glass and the recipe needs 2/3 cup of butter, I fill the glass with butter until it is 1/3 of the way under the mark??????

Edit: The Tesco Soup for One Tub I used up yesterday (reduced to 14p - yummy and a bargain!) and washed up last night seems to hold EXACTLY 250 ml of water!!

  • 1/3 cup of butter is approx 3oz ,so you need 6oz.For a bread recipe you don't have to be that exact with the fat quantities.

    1 1/2 cups water =12 fl oz
1 cup of mash sorry not sure about this one :o
    2/3 cup sugar = 6 oz
    6-7 cups flour = 1 lb 11 oz-2 lb

    HTH
  • The finished article!!!!

Didn't quite have enough butter , so hoping any oil/butter in the Smash will compensate....used just under half the packet of Smash, so I've put the rest of it in the cupboard and if it works I'll do some more next week.

Have to confess though, I'm such a bread addict, i'll probably eat it whatever it tastes like!!! :D
