Thanks Holsale :T ,do you think the eggs are vital? my dd is allergic to them.I find eggs in bread more of an enriching ingredient than vital to the success of the recipe, what do you think?

well it has butter in it so that can replace the fat for the eggs

i use 1 heaping tablespoon of soya flour and 1 tablespoon of water (courtesy of TG!) in most baking and it's fine as long as there is other fat in it

i'd try that should work fine

you can get soy flour from nearly any health food shop quite cheaply and unlike eggs it doesn't go off ;)

I mean, using newspaper to wrap children's presents, come on! We all know that brightly coloured wallpaper oddments from DIY shops is what you should use!!

ahhh you've obviously never seen a full colour sunday comics section have you? it's a cheap way to get your kids favourite comic character on their wrapping paper... actually it looks quite nice, i'd used that trick before i found her book ;)

. I certainly get the impression her husband Jim would probably like to get drunk and roll around naked in a pile of money while she's out of the house on one of her yard sale trips, just to relieve the endless tightwadding!

thought i'd let everyone know that i went ahead and made up some refrigerator dough using the remaining smash i had left in my cupboard

i shall let you know how it turns out

i may also post some very amusing photo's, you see, i made a DOUBLE batch!

we have been wanting to make up some pizza bases, par bake for a few minutes then stack and freeze

well, i figured if i doubled it i could make quite a few bases and still have some left for those yummy cinnamon rolls too!

course, having done this before i KNOW that it's going to get HUGE in the fridge so i have taken before pictures and will take an after picture too, should be amusing :rotfl:

actually, it has already been amusing.. dd 4, had her sad rainy day cheered up by helping me make it up. she really really enjoyed kneading the bread... this is a frugal mommy and kid time that i think amy would approve of ;) i was so pleased that she enjoyed it, i really want her to learn to appreciate homemade food and the entire process of cooking, it will serve her very well in her later life!

by the way, if you've been contemplating making the pretzel recipe i say go for it, they are lovely and chewy just the way you get the pretzels fresh baked in the mall! (or you would if you had them here!)

I also get the feeling, like some other posters, that she is too harsh and her children may reject this lifestyle. I certainly get the impression her husband Jim would probably like to get drunk and roll around naked in a pile of money while she's out of the house on one of her yard sale trips, just to relieve the endless tightwadding!

    :rotfl:

I love that and do agree that there is a fine line between being careful and it consuming ever waking hour. As it seemed to in her case.

here's the first one, you can see my battered copy of tightwad gazette, and perhaps even some of my writing inside (this recipe and conversions)

    WhatIstartedwith.jpg

for reference here's what it looked like when i put it in my fridge

    inmyfrugalfridge.jpg

and here are the results... it was actually much larger last night, i reckon all the opening and closing of the door has made it settle, still, bit amusing you should have seen the look on dd's face when she saw it :rotfl:

    pizza bases
    rolls
    cinnamon rolls/bread

anything you'd use a basic yeast bread dough for. the great thing about this stuff is you make a big batch on say sunday then take out what you need over the week and make what you want. towards the end of the 5 days it may get a bit sourish, but that just gives you the sourdough flavour which is also nice ;)

Hi there, might be a silly question, but what do you make from this dough?

Sounds great being able to keep it in the fridge and pull off bits as needed, but not if I don't know what I might need them for! :D

I'm quite keen to try this, as having seen all the chat about loaded potato skins, I'll need to do something with the excess potato!

Edit: just seen the post above, don't know how I missed it :o Must have only read the first page!

Edit again: how do you make pretzels (dd1's favourite!) and cinnamon rolls?

i'm going to make stromboli with some tonight

simply oil a rectangular pan, roll out to fit pan spread topping inside

tonight's will be sauteed red onions with a small bit of chicken and brie (got brie on clearance!) then it will be rolled up into a big log and baked til it's golden and comes out clean when you stick a knife through it mmmm
