Thank You so much for the recipe for cinnamon buns-
I have just made them and they are gorgeous!
DDs have just had two large cinnamon buns each and love them!:j
Trying not to be tempted to order the book from Amazon but my resolve is weakening as I type lol."This site is addictive!"

i made the cinnamon rolls today too! mmmmm dd would have happily eaten them all
i also made up a pizza base that i par baked, ready for tonights tea
and i made up a huge batch of garlic parmesan rolls to go with the cream of asparagus soup i made (given a bottle of mushy asparagus, what else do you do with it?)
i'm shocked to say that i have actually used up that ENTIRE double batch of refrigerator dough already
i must say though, i think next time i'll just do pizza dough in my bread machine on the dough setting... it makes a better crust and this refrigerator dough is much better for rolls and stuff...
with the pizza and the stromboli i made last night i found it very difficult to get it to stretch... it was like elastic :rotfl: it just kept shrinking back after i rolled it out!
it would make some really nice little filled rolls though, maybe fill it with rhubarb and apple or mix in cheese to the center and cook... it tastes fine as crust for stromboli and pizza too, but was a lot of hard work to get it to fit the pan!
oh well, the stromboli i made was huge and enough for 2 main meals and a lunch, i've made enough rolls for 3 days, i made what *should* be enough cinnamon rolls for 2 days (yeah right, they won't last the night!) and of course the pizza base... looks like it's time to get some more value flour!founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
Blairweech wrote:I just bought the More-with-Less cookbook based on the advice in this thread. It looks quite good - particularly useful when I move out on my own in a few months and have to fend for myself for the first time in my life!
i just ordered it today as well!
also got a highly recommended slow cooker cookbook and a bargain dvd mentioned on the grab it now board as a present for dd's birthday in october... all in all it came to £17.53 no postage and i already had £20 in amazon vouchers sitting in my account from surveys etc so it was FREE!
can't wait til it gets here :Tfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
thriftmonster wrote:OK - now I just have to work out if it's more frugal to buy them from Amazon or get DH to buy them in the States next time he goes
it may well be cheaper to buy them in the states!founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

dd has really enjoyed all the baking we've been doing this week inspired by this thread (thanks!) today she saw me take the bowl of dough out of the fridge and started excitedly clapping her hands shouting 'yay baking, yay baking' i guess it's a hit then? :rotfl: :Tfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
Holsale, where do you do the surveys to get the amazon vouchers ?. I do a Unex postal survey as a receiver and get them there, but if there were other sites that give these, I'd be quite happy to do surveys for them.Penny xxx

my two are just getting used to being allowed to cook (within reason) whatever they want in the kitchen. I only ask that they check that what they are about to use isn't planned for a meal - but milk/flour/eggs/sugar are fairly much bought in bulk and not planned. Banana bread, apple bread and pastry so far - pastry was made twice and they learnt an important lesson.... read and check that you've included EVERYTHING on the list
We love the More with Less cook book (I've also go the Living More with Less inspirational book and the leaders handbook for discussion groups) that and the https://www.savingdinner.com books are almost constantly used here.0 -
What I love most about the Tightwad Gazette books (I have the omnibus) is her whole philosophy of frugality, and how it doesn't have to be about deprivation at all. Along with the practical stuff - all the excellent recipes, tips for refinishing furniture, how to dress you children cheaply etc - are some wonderful essays that outline this philosophy in a very readable and interesting way.
Amy was inspired by the desire to have a large family and a big house while being a 'stay-at-home mom'. Her husband earnt only an average salary, but they achieved their goals. Just as in the UK, most people don't believe this is possible - she shows that it is. More power to her!0 -
I think the biggest giggle in the TWG for me, was her article about buying second-hand undies :rotfl: And it's that article that sums up her book, it's not the "extremes", it's about attitude and the way you look at things.
When my mother told me about using gravy browning and an eyebrow pencil for "stockings" during the war, that was laughable to my generation - hysterical and bizarre to my own DD; yet it made perfect sense to a young women back in the war years. Attitude and the way you look at things
A word of caution on the section of "Dumpster Diving" - basically, rummaging through skips to find useable items. If you get caught, you could be in trouble with 'the boys in blue' in this country.kittie wrote:I am a member of the club as from today!!! What a book!!
1.5" thick. I only had time to open it once on one page today and I saw `when slicing bread, save the crumbs etc` this is a very good start for me because I slice my own HM bread regularly and I never ever thought to save the crumbs. A simple little idea but it is the pennies that add up
You can freeze those crumbs for using up in recipes at a later date, too~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
