I dont really know why she was surprised at the quality of the stock, its quite common for low value stuff in some areas and better/more expensive stuff in posher areas. Once she's gone will the quality of the stock improve? I already think charity shops are overpriced in the majority of stuff they sell. Yes, charity shops are retail but people go to them because they cant afford or dont want to pay retail prices!
I think the top end designer stuff should sell for more, like the Jimmy Choos, Mulberry etc, but I agree I wouldnt pay £8 for a top shop jacket either.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
I saw a Matthew Williamson by Debenhams jacket in a charity shop in Richmond, worn, but a nice colour so I had a look.
It was priced at £50.
They also had Primark dresses at £10 a pop, also worn - and as we all know Primark clothing can have a limited life as it is!0 -
I should know not to even look when I have no money to buy.
This morning I did my usual tour of the charity shops on the way home from school drop off,I just have a quick scan, and I saw loads I would have bought.
One item I didnt want to leave on the shelf was a valentino handbag for £4!I went home, rumaged through all my little dishes, vases etc which I throw change into and got just enough to go back and buy it.
I saw and had to leave some carlton ware dishes,a couple of gorgeous blue and white tea sets and some vintage 1930,s and 50,s clothing.I am sure someone else will snap them up."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
Unfortunately, the charity shops near us seem to price things more expensively than you might hope to pick up the same items new in the sales...
The car boots are better though. I've not had any amazing finds but I've bought all my little boys clothes and toys at them and must have saved many hundreds of pounds in the last 3 years as a result. I've also started buying some clothes for me too, if the stuff is nice and barely worn. Rarely spend more than 50p to £1 for anything.
Trouble is, who else feels like this(?), if I now go to the shops to buy anything new it all seems so overpriced that I can't bring myself to spend any money there - why would I spend £50 on a skirt when I might find something similar at a car boot at the weekend for 50p?0 -

Yeah I'm the same now, I just find some shops so overpriced....Next for example, I've seen jeans in there I really like, but purleese, £40 for Next jeans (and why do I always pick out the most expensive?)...I now I can buy cheaper but it's not so easy to find well fitting jeans when you're a size 18. And it's so much more satisfying to find a quality item for 50p at the boot sale:j0 -

All of us! That's why we're addicted to this thread. :T0 -
What are good brand names that we should look out for that may be worth something0

And there are still some bargains to be had.. picked up a pair of vintage black Ferragamo courts in Belfast on Tuesday, unworn condition, £3! (even better, they fit... I wear a 35/2½ so even finding that size is difficult!)
My local charity shop is based in a barn and has lots of car parking, so a lot of people drop stuff off there rather than having to carry bags to shops in town. The manageress always offers you a cup of tea or coffee - a good strategy, as it means that you don't just dash in and out, but wander round and generally have a good plunder, usually find things. Plus there are about 20 of us "regulars" who have a chat, compare notes on our finds - there and elsewhere - it's as much a social club as anything!
Of course, I also do car boots, but I'm spoilt for choice in reasonably-priced charity shops!0 -
