I have been going to jumbles and car boot sales for over 30 years.

At first it was because I used to be a bookworm and then I started buying stuff for the house, clothes and toys for the children.

Until the early 1990s, no-one bothered much with the bric-a-brac and the costume jewellery was generally considered as tat and these could be picket up for a few pence. I used to get the vintage clothes, bags and costume jewellery for my daughter to play dressing-up with her friends and when they has their tea-parties it would be real bone china bought from the jumbles sale. In the mid-1980s, I started collecting costume jewellery brooches and within 5 years, I had around 500 pieces and I still have most of these to this day. After a while, I noticed that when I was rummaging around in the costume jewellery boxes at the jumble sales, other would just put their hand it and grab and that annoyed me, so I started just buying all the boxes of jewellery to rummage through at home. Vintage costume jewellery was not widely appreciated at that time, but I loved the quality and the glitter, so I just kept them and this ways I ended up with loads of necklaces, beads, bracelets etc and I have never really got round to selling them. Also ended up buying loads of china, glassware, etc mainly because at the end of those mammoth jumbles the items used to get dumped and you could get it either free or for a few pence.
Unsurprisingly, I was running out of space, so I started selling at the car boot sales, but mainly things like books and household items and clothes. The problem was I found it hard to stop buying other people junk, so I spent all my earning just buying up more bits.
I then moved on to selling at a flea market, but again I could stop spending my earnings on the bargains available.
Then I started renting a unit in an antique and collectibles centre in Hatfield, Herts and expanded to 2 units and a cabinet and stayed until the centre closed 7 years later.
I used to do a glass collectors fair in Woking, Surrey twice yearly for 4 years, but I gave up due to ill-health.
The result is I now have 2 rented lock-ups, 2 large sheds in the garden and the conservatory to house what my partner refers to as "your pile of junk".

I am in the process of building my own website to sell my better quality items including the vintage costume jewellery.

Over the years, I have had my share of bargains. Some of the best were:

Pair of Victorian glass jugs bought at a charity shop for £5 and sold at the Glass Fair for £95.

Victorian Bohemian crystal perfume bottle for 50p at a car boot- sold to another dealer at the Glass Fair for £75.

Swarovski crystal candlestick for £2 at a car boot- sold to another dealer at the Glass Fair for £75.

The fact that so many other dealers bought loads off my stalls, meant that I priced the items way below the real value, but for the price I paid for them, I didn't really care.

In all the years I did my selling, I never priced anything at the book price.
The price in the antique and collectible guides are just an indication and are never definite.

My best bargain was a plate with a flower design with stone inlay. I already had one so i knew what it was. It was originally from the Taj Mahal area (same white marble )and is hand crafted. They cost £40-50 but mine was 20p! I can't believe the things some people want to get rid of.

I went to my first boot sale on Sunday. Picked up a Little Tikes Kitchen and 2 basket loads of accessories (pots/pans/food) for £15, it was exactly what I had gone for as missed out on one on ebay the night before (my highest bid was £30).
    Will definitely go again soon.

My best bargain was a Grogg that I picked up from a charity shop for £4. Any Welsh MSE-ers will probably know about these, but for those that don't they are little cartoon figures mainly of rugby players, that are very collectable and are worth on average around £70!
