If you are interested in birds and/or conservation, you could consider volunteering with the Spring Watch in Malta, in April. It is 20 euro a day whoch includes meals and accommodation, plus your flight. You can go for one week or two. There is also a Raptor Camp in the autumn. Volunteers go from all over the world, and the official language is English.

A friend of mine frequently dines alone on holiday. She swears by taking a book to the restaurant... she's says the book is good company like a conversation over dinner and also distracts her from looking round the room and noticing other people's glances.

Yes, forgot to mention in my earlier reply, the ONLY time I felt a little self-conscious being on my own, was walking into a village pub of an evening for a meal. Take a book, paper or, better still, a dog (I know, totally impractical anywhere other than UK!), but what an ice-breaker - complete strangers will happily talk to a dog rather than a human!

  • why are people (no offence) suggesting horse-back treks, conservation walks or national trusts packages?!?! The girl is only young, she's not in her 50's!!

She needs to go somewhere where the weather is sunny and reliable (DEFINATELY not in the uk), educating (walking mountains isn't), with a wonderful culture and hundreds/thousands of years of history - somewhere she can take a guidebook and read everything about that city and for every corner she turns, she'll learn something new, exciting and visually breathtaking - ROME is the place to go!:T

    p.s - yes, i love Rome, LOL:rotfl:

I'd go see something I'd always wanted to see.

Maybe it's the mountains of Scotland, the Lake district, London, or even the bulbfields of Holland (ok, maybe that last one's pushing it a bit)

I'd go on an organised coach tour if it was somewhere in travelling distance - it keeps costs down, and you'll get to know people from the group and even if they're couples they'll probably invite to sit with them at dinnertime. There will likely be a few singles on your coach too, though, so you'll find some drinking buddies too!

Just don't book with Saga.co.uk;) and there should be some younger folk on the bus.

I've seen yachting holidays before where ppl can crew a yacht, but I don't think it was in your budget range - they had onboard chefs and things!

My suggestion of the National Trust working holiday - I thought she might meet some hunky "Bear Grylls" outsdoorsy type - however, I have to admit - I am nearly 50!!!

As the GM of an hotel in Telford, I am probably a little biased, but I can certainly recommend Telford and the Shropshire area for a break. I'm not just being mercenary, although I'd love you to stay at my hotel, it's genuinely a great place to visit. Ironbridge Gorge and its associated museums, fantastic walking, Wroxeter vinyard, RAF Musum Cosford, Dry ski slope, The Edge Adventures, Bars, restaurants, it's all here.
I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. I can't promise to be perfect, but I'm happy to try to help.

Why not volunteering in another country? Do you like animals? Kids? It will be really busy and you'll get to do amazing things. Im looking at 4 weeks in Africa next year on my own. xx
