Holiday by myself

  • Hi Wannabe,

I would definitely suggest some sort of activity holiday as you would inevitably be with other people with at least one similar interest.

I'm single and love going off by myself doing this and that. I do like walking and I often stay in hostels. This not only makes it cheaper, but I have always ended up in the most interesting conversations with all sorts of people and it does away with that potentially awkward 'eating alone in a restaurant' senario.

If you go at it with a good attitude and an adventurous spirit, you'll have a great time. And there are loads of other singles also going off by themselves (not necessarily looking for love!) and even un-coupley couples.

If you want some ideas, you coudl even try the National Trust for a working holiday. I've done those too and they're great.

    All the best

I must admit the eating alone bit is the only thing that's concerning me about my forthcoming trip - I can see me living on takeway snacks in my hotel room!

Do you know where the best place to travel solo is? Rome/Amalfi coast.

There's PLENTY to see and do in both places, the weather is fabulous, the food to die for and plenty of gorgeous looking hunks to boost your self esteem :o) I went to Rome twice in July and October last year (both occasions with different friends) and i'm going again in May (with my mum this time, as we've never been away together), however, i'll be taking my first solo trip back to Rome again end of July because I think it's about time i did something really liberating. I've been to Rome enough times to know my way around and i've made a couple of friends there, so i'm really excited about it (I'm 28 btw). Rome/Italy is the type of place you can feel completely safe, stroll around at a leasurely pace, visit some of the best architectural sites in the world and lap up the beautiful meditteranean weather.

I would recommend 3 nights Sorrento and 4 nights Rome - perfect! Don't go Horse riding, sounds really boring to me and will only keep you moderately entertained for all of 5 mins, at least in Italy you'll never tire of all the gorgeous visions you'll see.

I was in a similiar position to you about 4 years ago, and wasn't going to get a holiday, so booked a cheap flight to Edinburgh and spent a few days there, went over to Glasgow to watch a band with some people I sort of knew there - friends of friends, rather than my friends - and then back to Edinburgh and back home. Staying in a hostel meant I get talking to the other women there. I did find eating a real problem, as I could quite happily go in a bar and have a drink with something to read but basically lived on takeaway pizza... most of my friends were surprised by this and said they would eat alone, but not have gone to a pub on their own. I did a literary pub crawl, organised tour... not money saving at all but very interesting, and made it easy to get talking to other people.
I think anywhere where there are tourists and backpackers, you will be fine. (Italy or Prague sound wonderful.) I get the impression that you would be outgoing and capable and would enjoy that. You'd get a real buzz from having done it.
If you have any doubts, go for something organised, or try a night in say Oxford and see how you go.
I would rather travle than learn a craft, but there are lots of strange and interesting craft or writing courses, such as making shoes, making silver jewellry, blacksmithing...
The best thing is, you can do what you want and don't have to consider/ compromise with another person.

It just doesn't seem to be as much of a problem abroad. I feel far less self conscious abroad than here in the UK. And waiters usually take great care to give you a nice cosy table - often where you can people watch to your heart's content. I always take something to read to dinner as well. Often I might not even open it, but it helps to know that I have it if I want it. Dinner is also good time to go through your guide books and plan for the next day. Also, I find magazines are a bit easier to handle for a bit of coordinated eating and reading - easier than a book - so just pick up a stash at the airport on your way out. If you think that you might feel too self conscious dining alone then look for a hotel with its own restaurants or bar that serves food. The hotels are really used to lone travellers and there will be other people there eating alone too. Usually people travelling on business.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...

Go for it! When I went through a really rocky patch in my relationship I went off to Devon on my own and rode right across Exmoor on horseback, just pitching up at stables each day and making my way round this glorious county. I met up with some lovely people, but was equally happy on my own. It was something I had always wanted to do and yet had never got round to. I loved it and it gave me time to think about what I wanted to do, rather than everyone else in my life!!

    Check out HF holidays

    http://www.hfholidays.co.uk/

It mainly organises walking holidays at home and abroad, but also has a range of activity / interest holidays too. Although it isn't a 'singles' organisation, there are always plenty of singletons on the holidays. Meals are taken at large tables, usually seating around 8 people, so you always have someone to chat to at mealtimes. The holidays are not cheap, but include all meals including a packed lunch, and the food is excellent. The cost also includes walking leaders and/or tuition (depending on what holiday you choose).

If you check out the website for 'offers' and sign up to the newsletter, you can sometimes pick up a good deal.

Try a weekend or an easter break, you will be hooked, I promise!

A friend of mine frequently dines alone on holiday. She swears by taking a book to the restaurant... she's says the book is good company like a conversation over dinner and also distracts her from looking round the room and noticing other people's glances.
