I've just phoned and closed my account. They asked why and when I explained I was concerned about the breaches in security they didn't seem to be at all bothered. I was told when I want to order again just to register as a new customer!
  • As an update on my own incident, I've spoken to Play.com this morning too. They said the orders are still in the "picking" stage, but it sounds like their systems aren't the best and they can't guarantee that they can stop them being shipped out (or stop me being charged: I've just checked and the money still hasn't gone from my account). They have made efforts to stop it, however, including cancelling my account.

While it is still slightly annoying that, despite reporting the fraud, it's still possible that not only will I still be charged, but the theif might even still receive the items, Play.com have been very apologetic and have assured me that if I do get charged, I should call back in 48 hours and they'll give me a full refund. That's slightly reassuring at least!

I just want to say thanks to the OP and many others who have posted on this thread, as unfortunate as it was for those people it has probably stopped a lot of others from having the same happen to them.

I used to think Play.com was fantastic and have used it a lot in the past but thanks to this thread I have changed my details and will be a lot more careful in the future.

Its just unbelievable how the addresses of the thieving gits are there but the police wont do anything, yet again proving how useless they really are (my personal opinion).

TIGERWOODS: That's the same address that my play.com order went to!

This so stinks of an internal breach of security doesn't it?

Someone out there is having such a laugh at our expense, I work from home so nobody at "work" could have got my log-on details, my passwords are all random letters and numbers and our home PC security is good and often updated.

I did only use play.com for Christmas and Birthday presents and only recently went in and ordered a CD for Mother's Day. I doubt that I will be ordering from them ever again and have told relatives etc. to be very cautious.

It would be good if Watchdog did investigate.

Thankfully I have managed to get all my money back, but no doubt in three weeks time I'll read on this thread of yet another poor soul and a delivery address in Romford.
  • There has been fraudulent activity on my credit card since I last placed an order with play. Someone's been trying to use it to top-up their mobile.

Yep, happened to me today. I was out shopping and had a call to say my card had been used for various items online.
I hadn't read this thread before but have been using my card online for as long as I can remember, years, but have only recently (couple weeks ago) used Play.com.
The lady that rang me actually said it could be from Play!
So while someone else was out spending my money, I came home with no shopping because it had been blocked.
Not before running up more than I could have spent in the same amount of time!
Bless .......................... they did send 2 payments to Oxfam........... She said they do this to see if there is any money in your account.

The security breach is with Play but it would be suicidal to admit this (business wise) so they will deny it and try to pass the blame on the breach to the customer.

If your computer or email account had been hacked do you think they would only target Play with their fraudulent activities?

The fraudsters order items from your account and then request a password change to try and delay you finding out about the fraudulent activity on your account so they can get the goods.

Since several people have indicated that the goods are being sent to the same address then the police would easily be able to go around and find the fraudsters, but they know that the police won't get involved.

Many thanks to the OP and other postsers for raising this and providing advice. :T Was horrified to hear this as we use play a fair bit, although not had a problems recently.

I've gone in tonight and changed my card details to one of the test numbers from the paypal site. I've also aged myself by 19 years!! Actually should have made myself younger really, come to think of it!! lol :D

I probably won't use play for a while cos of this, but when I do, can I use my real card number again or will I have to register it with them again from scratch? And then presumably change it back to a false one again immediately afterwards.

Or would I have to set up a new account - and wait for that one to be hacked too......
Big thanks to Martin Lewis for helping us start to sort out our finances!!!:A

    Best Comp win:X-Box 360!!

You could still use your account, just add your 'real' credit card to replace of the 'test' credit card and place your order. Once the payment is taken change the card details back to the 'test' card.
