You could still use your account, just add your 'real' credit card to replace of the 'test' credit card and place your order. Once the payment is taken change the card details back to the 'test' card.

Just make sure they've actually charged the card before changing the details back to fake ones (i think they only do it on dispatch) otherwise they suspend your account and cancel the order! I paid with playtrade funds so didn't think it would matter but then I had to phone them to re-activate my account

Thanks for that - I actually do have two orders outstanding waiting for stock to arrive. I'll double check my statement to see if the payments have gone out. The cashback has tracked, but I'm not sure if the payment itself has gone out.
Big thanks to Martin Lewis for helping us start to sort out our finances!!!:A

Not read all of this thread, so please correct me if I am wrong here, but has anyone been to the police? it may not seem like something worth doing, but if many of you are getting dispatches to the same address, same name etc, it could be worth the police looking into it.

I'm so alarmed at this that i've put bogus card details on my account. I haven't ordered anything since xmas since I found Amazon items got to me faster anyway. I've also been thinking it's an inside job.

Just want to say many thanks to the OP and everyone else for the info. I haven't ordered anything from Play for a while and won't be until they seem a bit more secure.

You can't be too careful these days so have changed my card details (as they wouldn't let me delete them) and will get my other half to do so when he comes in!

    Thank you again x

Unfortunately under arrangements that were contained under the Fraud Act 2006 and which came into effect in 2007. Credit card fraud MUST be reported to the police by the relevant bank. The police will not be interested if the victim reports it direct to them the victim will just be told to report it to the bank concerned.

Credit card, but what about debit card? when my account was stolen (not via play, but I am 99% sure via 3-mobile) I had £500 stolen in one shot (spent on net-a-porter). I went to my bank who asked me to go to the police for a crime number- they wouldn't even believe me until I had a crime number and told me they thought it was strange I had even gone to them first over the police!
That was in 2007. Has the law changed for all normal/non credit card accounts now?

jenniewb - the money I had stolen (nearly £2000) was from a debit card and I just phoned the bank who sorted it out . They didn't tell me to go to the police or anything.

  • This has recently happened to me too. I was quite unlucky that because the goods had been dispatched they would not stop the transaction so because of play.com I'm now out a significant amount of money.

because I've used play.com before my bank have informed me that it's not fraud. I'm absolutely incensed! I'm a lawyer, and I've sent a claim letter to play.com - I'd be interested to know whether anyone would be willing to be joined to the proceedings or whether they'd be willing to give evidence as to the situation?

Apologies I should have made that a little more clearer. As a result of the 2006 Fraud act, fraud on Credit and Debit cards should be reported to your bank who then theoretically report and liaise with the police.

Is actually came into effect on the 1st April 2007

If your card has been stolen as a result of burglary or pickpockets etc that should be still reported direct to the police
