Play.com Fraud - warning

Just want to thank everyone for the contributions to this thread. I was shocked when checking my email account this evening to find four separate emails from play.com with orders for four items being sent to a 'James' in Essex. Totalling nearly £150 that I cannot afford to lose. I couldn't get hold of play.com this evening and didn't know what else to do other than search for some information online - and here it all is. I have been in touch with my bank and they are being really helpful and they are going to try to ensure that no items get put through on my account until I can contact play.com.
Just to add one last thing - it appears that the scammers may have gotten a little more sophisticated. When I tried to access my account, I was told that my email address didn't exist and I have not yet been able to get into the account - which would have hopefully have allowed me to cancel the orders.

PS I have also reported this to BBC's Watchdog as someone else has suggested and pointed them towards this thread as evidence that it is happening to a significant number of people.0 -
Its such a personal violation, and these hackers seem very blatant, I could actually see where my items were being delivered on the new Google Street Map.
I am happy to say that the £139 was re-credited back onto my new credit card - having cancelled my old card when some dear kind person ordered a load of DVD's on Monday 30th March. I felt very wary opening a new play.com account and entering my new credit card number just to get the money back.
Now that the money is in my bank account I have deleted the credit card and have entered a dummy one which was accepted fine. I am still waiting to see if Natwest will refund me for the £30 worth of items which play.com dispatched, who know maybe!

If it is only Play.com that you are finding fraudulent transactions then it points directly to a security breach at Play rather than your own computer.
Since anyone that had got your details from for example spyware, would surely use it at other retail outlets rather than target just Play.
Play are never going to admit the security breach are they?0 -
My Play Account has just been hacked so thought I would post here in case anyone has the same problem in the
future. I work in IT also and take Anti virus, Spyware, Firewall and wireless security, passwords etc very seriously.
I had not visted Play.com for around 3 months, so was very suprised to get an e-mail for 2 items for £60 shipped to an address in London (150 miles away) E Eagles, 14 Lutwyche Road,London,SE6 4EP.
I was then unable to login to my Play Account, I called Play straight away and was given conflicting information.
They said "We have closed your account as it was to a suspicious address".
So what has happened to the order? "We have posted it already and unable to cancel it, please contact your card issuer"
When I asked about security of the site and future account they said why not setup a new one!!!!!!!!
They were quite unhelpful and has certanly made me think twice about storing my details with them.
My card company has been able to stop the payment as it wasnt fully processed, so very lucky to get there quick.
What I find odd is that they had processed the order then closed my account without making any effort to contact me.
I can see the hackers house on Google Street View, shall we pay them a visit0 -
I don't know if my story is directly linked but I used Play a lot and had my Tesco credit card details stored there. Approx 14 days ago Tesco called me to say that they believed there was unathorised transactions on my account and they had blocked one and had cancelled my card as a precaution.
Tesco were actually quite cagey about it so I rather suspected they might have had hackers as they were not happy to actually tell me what sites my card had been use don. They mentioned three or four small payments were made to general sites where a log in was required, these went through OK, then a larger one for transatlantic flights which had flagged up the fraud as it exceeded my limit.
My card stays in the house at all times, it has no pin and is only used on Amazon and play where details are stored. I also signed up for the extra security thingy where before authorisation I have to answer a secret question and use a password, so it is a mystery to me what happened.
As I said though I cannot link my hack directly to Play and Tesco were being very cagey about something, but it does seem a co incidence.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. thanks for flagging this. i changed my card details when I first saw this thread - play should issue some sort of statement warning their users of this as it's clear something has happened at play's end given all of the reports here0

How did you change your details? Did you phone them? I tried to change mine but when I did it just kept saying that there was a problem with the information - you know, like invalid card number or whatever. I couldn't seem to do anything?

dh had an account that he hadn't used for a while. He couldn't remember which card or what email he'd used. So I guessed at it, requested an email password reminder- which was sent to a dead email account and forwarded on to me. So I've overwritten all the details with a dummy credit card number (someone posted a list earlier in the thread) and changed the address to another one ( local post office) Phew! Thanks posters, now to email my friends...0
