    This is the email I have got from ING. The only thing I have removed is my name. As you can see there is no account or customer number. Also I don't remember been given a option about statements.

    Thank you for your recent online application to open an ING Direct account.

    In order to complete the account opening process, please send us the following:

    1. A cheque for at least £1. This should be made payable to yourself (the name must be exactly the same as the one given on your application) from the account you have designated as your linked account. Please write your ING Direct Customer Number and Account Number on the back of the cheque. If you are opening a joint account we will need a separate cheque from both of you, one from each linked account. If you have selected a joint current account as your linked account we only require one cheque made payable to both account holders.

    2. To verify your address we need you to send one of the following documents, which must be less than three months old:
    * an original utility bill (e.g. gas, electricity, water, but NOT a mobile telephone bill); or
    * an original bank statement (e.g. current account statement, credit card statement, but NOT a store card statement); or
    * an original and current council tax bill

    3. To verify your identity please send us one of the following:
    * a certified copy of your current passport (for non UK passport holders, copies must be certified by your solicitor, bank or embassy official); or
    * a certified copy of your current EU photo-card or full UK paper driving licence (non-UK copies must be certified by your solicitor, bank or embassy official); or
    * an original or certified copy of your latest HM Revenue & Customs notice of coding; or
    * an original or certified copy of your Tax assessment; or
    * a letter confirming your right to state benefits or state pensions.

    To certify a document, take a black and white photocopy of the original document and give it to an ING Direct recognised professional (e.g. a practicing teacher, GP, bank official, solicitor or accountant). To show that it is a true copy of the original document the certifier must do the following:
    * Sign and date the document
    * State their full name
    * State their occupation
    * State their full business address
    * State their telephone number
    * The person needs to write 'I certify this is a true copy of an original document seen by me and presented by (insert your name) who is known to me.'

    Once you have your cheque(s) and two documents ready, please write your ING Direct customer number on the front of them, and then send them to us at the following freepost address:

    ING Direct
    FREEPOST NATW1784
    Reading
    Berkshire
    RG6 1BR

    If we have required any original documentation to process your application, we will check it and return it to you promptly. Once your cheque(s) and documents (if applicable) have been received and regulatory checks have been carried out satisfactorily, we will then send you your welcome pack. Once you have activated your PIN and set a memorable date (or in the case of joint accounts, both of you have activated your security details), you will be able to use your account to carry out transactions.

    If you have requested a quarterly online statement for your account, we'll notify you when it's ready for viewing online, via this email address. Otherwise, you will receive your paper statement at the beginning of each quarter.

    Please note that you will not be able to reply to this email, however if you do have any questions, please visit ingdirect.co.uk or call us on 0845 603 8888.

    Thank you for saving with ING Direct.

    Yours sincerely

    Julian Hartley
    Customer Service Director

    ING Direct will never send you emails asking for your confidential or personal security information such as your PIN or memorable date.
    If you receive any such request, please contact one of our Customer Service Team immediately on 0845 603 8888.

    FYI... didn't work for me and the only contact I've ever had with ING is when they took over my Kaupthing Edge account. Might save someone some wasted effort :)
  • morning - copied below is the only request I got from them in my email - I guess i must have been lucky (for once!)

    The best thing to do is to phone the new customers number as it is a freephone one and costs them money rather then you.

    I was wondering on a general question can I do that to all the companies with freephone numbers?

    Was your customer number and account number on the email? I was wondering what kind of email everyone else got.

    My email had none of the "Send ID" stuff so it looks to me like they do some online ID checking and if the information you enter matches then all you need to send is a cheque for £1.
