Just tried to open one, but as I had an account with them years ago (closed years ago), irritatingly, their system won't acknowledge me as a new customer.

The email I got from them did not contain my customer number or reference number. Anyway I contacted them on the freephone new customers number and the woman was very helpful. She told me to write my name, address and date of birth at the back of the cheque. I also sent a covering letter explaining what happened and what was said.

DH & I have both opened accounts last night as soon as we could:thank goodness for being old fashioned and having what used to be called 'chequeing' accounts!

Nicerate of interest & £40 on its way to our holiday fund ;)

    Thanks OP!

if you have an ING near you, then you can take it into them
I got asked for ID as well .

ING direct don't have branches. So troublesome. I'm not going to pay for a potential £20, so I'll do what the other guy is doing and sending it off without certification.
