  • I only have a 'basic bank account' (and am unable to open a standard one) which although it's a current account, and has direct debit facilities and a debit card etc., it does NOT have the cheque book facility ....I opened the ING savings account, but now I can't complete it as have 'no personal cheque', so the customer services said "No" ...even though I offered passport, bills etc., etc., to confirm identity :-( ....ah well, was worth a try! - thanks for the alert!

Just spoke to ING to confirm if I needed to send any proof of ID. I luckily did not.
Apparently they use Experian to credit check everyone. Anyone who
they can not verify may need to send in extra proof of ID. This usually appies to
people who move house a lot.
