Re the Egg Money card - I looked up their web page, through Martin's link, found a contact telephone no. and spoke to an adviser. That was where I got the information about it not being 1pc across the board anymore. She told me the rules had changed in recent months!!!!! I understand the fact that there are offers through their site for purchases which will realise a higher percentage - but they aren't the average weekly purchases are they? I've been using my Morgan Stanley for the day-to-day shopping - groceries, butcher, petrol etc. - none of which might be eligible if the business isn't "registered" as it were with the Bank. Oh well, back to using cash in the purse I guess.

Or sign up for the Yorkshire Building Society card which pays 1% for all transactions. That's what I have done.

  • A word of warning about travel abroad and using credit cards. I have been building up cashback on the Morgan Stanley Platinum, however got stung when I used it in France as every transaction (regardless of size) attracted a foreign currency fee. Paying for a 5Euro road toll charge almost cost double because of this - ouch!
My other credit card doesn't do this to me - will know for next time, grrrr....

I have an Egg Money card and have received no notification of any change. I wonder if the new terms apply to new customers only. The site is still quoting the old terms. I'll be very annoyed if they are not paying the full cashback.

A warning about cancelling the Morgan Stanley card (I have just done that). A Direct Debit has been charged on my card since the last Statement just paid. I have sent a cheque for the DD amount as had I waited the deduction would have appeared at the next statement date thus incurring the £20 annual fee.

I have just cancelled my morgan stanley 'classic' cash back card. They informed me that it is only the classic cards being charged the £20 fee. My husband has the platium card and did not receive the letter but will also be cancelling his. As the morgan stanley was the back up card to the amex I now need another back up card.

    YBS seems good

    * 1p back for every £1 spent using your card for the first £2,000 spent in any one year, and
    * 1p back for every £2 spent using the card after the first £2,000 spent in any one year

Yes - I have just cancelled my MS Classic for the same reason AND apparently I can't change from Classic to Platinum NOR can I apply for a Platinum for SIX MONTHS after closing the Classic account!

Their loss I think - let me have a look at YBS

After asking Egg they have confirmed by email that the 1% payback still applies on all purchases on my Egg Money card.

Is the Egg card Visa or Mastercard? Already have a Mastercard but would like a Visa card.

Not according to my reply from them.

"With the Egg card you only get cash back with selected online retailers.

With the Egg Money card you can get 1% cash back on all purchases and upto 20% cash back with selected online retailers.

To get the higher rate with the selected on line retailers you'll need to purchases the products through the links on our website."

I have now received my YBS cash-back card and PIN and everything is now up and running. But they have also sent me some of those pesky credit-card cheques which are treated as cash advances if you are ever tempted to use them. Mine went straight through the shredder and I will request the company not to send any more.

  • I'm slightly fed up with Amex Platinum. Having read the article, I decided that this was likely to be the best card for me as I'm getting married this summer. We've saved up for everything already but thought we'd make our money work a little bit wiser by using a Cashback card to pay for everything and then pay if off with our savings when due.

So, I double-checked Amex's criteria, felt happy that I should be eligible and applied online before sitting back to await the arrival of my new card. Said card has never arrived, instead a letter saying that I did not meet Amex's criteria. Slightly confused, I phoned their customer service department who told me that they could not tell me their criteria and but the person I spoke to saw no reason for the rejection and suggested I write in. So I posted the letter and heard nothing so phoned again and still couldn't be told anything! Finally a letter arrived, saying they had reconsidered my application but I was still not eligible but I still don't know why!

Has anyone else had these difficulties? It seems ridiculous that I can't find out why they've rejected my application!
