According to a couple of sources I've seen, there are more germs in the average sink plughole than in the toilet

As someone (sorry, no time to check back) has already pointed out, the vital bit to keep clean is the seat, as that's what you come into contact with.

It's probably fair to say that unless your toilet is the same state as the ones mrcow mentions (how can people live like that  ), then keeping it clean and pleasant to use is probably going to deal with the germs well enough, and again, cleaning the loo brush if you use one and making sure its out of bounds to children (until they're old enough to use it for cleaning up after themselves rather than playing with it!) is probably enough to keep it acceptably safe.

Don't forget to put vinegar/bicarb/bleach/soda crystals (depending on you preference) down those plugholes regularly though!

I have to put my hand up here and say "my name is Dianne and I use a loo brush" they used to be about 45p from MrT's so I change it frequently, I just can't bear the thought of putting my hand down the loo (even with gloves on) and wiping off poo - gross!!!

There have been a whole series of 'How often do you...?' threads in the last few weeks from changing sheets to clean pjs to having a bath/shower and they were hilarious and heated! Can't beat this board for a good laugh especially when nobody knows one another and they tell the truth! :rotfl:

    Were these on Old style?

If so can we have some links to them please?

Happy days lol! The real shame of it is that the woman then moved onto another property to spread her filth.

:eek::eek: Ye Gods! Some people obviously have no shame at all. My DH is an electrician and in his previous job had to do some work in local authority houses. He said the kitchens were disgusting. The work surfaces were covered in grease, frying pans would be left, dirty, on the stove for who knows how long (he would be sometimes doing work for a week and the pans wouldn't have been moved). One had mouse footprints and droppings in it . He was eating his lunch sitting in his van near these houses the other day and said that some of the women were going to the local shop in their pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers - and so would their young children!

I scraped the ceramic hob with a glass scraper and it looked like I was curling chocolate. The kitchen cupboards were spongy and the windows were either painted or screwed shut. I felt dirty until we ripped out the kitchen and got new windows. I actually preferred the week we had no kitchen or walls, to the couple of months where we had to put up with the original kitchen. :o

Yuck! I would have felt dirty too.

PJs is the only one I can find now, so I wonder if the others ended up being pulled as they got more heated?
    Numpties...I'm surrounded by them...save me...

Thanks BuddyBonthenet, I had a look at that thread, it does not only cover PJs but also bedding, underwear etc. and it makes me see what a grub of a bad housewife I am! LOL
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I think you are confusing Old Style with the Marriage and Families board which has had a few threads like that recently.

I clean my toilet several times a day!

And no, I am not obsessed or particularly anal, but my husband has Parkinson's Disease and he has a lot of trouble aiming right, and won't sit. So every time he goes, the rim of the toilet, the back of the seat, and the whole area around the toilet are covered with yellow stains or little puddles. Wheenever he has gone to the loo I go in after him and clean up.

What really, really makes me puke are carpets in bathrooms. The UK is th eonly country in the world where I have observed this phenomenon. I've lived in three houses since I moved here in 2001 and all three had a carpet; in two of the houses I replaced the carpet, but in one I had to leave it.

I mean, what happens if you have a hubby like mine, or a child that pukes and misses the mark and it goes in the carpet?

A friend of mine just had the carpet replaced in her bathroom - I was there at the time and I had to bite my tongue to ask her why? why? why?

So hands up all those here who have carpeted loos!

Oh, and to answer the OP question: I confess to owning a loo brush, and I clean with a spray and toilet paper and brush, occasionally bleach

No I'm definitely with you on this one, I've never had carpet in any bathroom of mine; I wipe the floor area with dettol-soaked cloth - I love the smell of dettol
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I do. I dislike it, but it was in before I moved in and I don't have the money to replace it.

I have to use a mixture of 1 cup salt and 1 cup of bicarb of soda on it once every fortnight. Then you vacume it up - it's a useful mix because it removes any odor from carpets. And it is safe for pets and children.
