I have to use a mixture of 1 cup salt and 1 cup of bicarb of soda on it once every fortnight. Then you vacume it up - it's a useful mix because it removes any odor from carpets. And it is safe for pets and children.
That sounds good. Does it also remove ground in dirt? I know salt removes red wine stains from caroets brilliantly. We had new, light-coloured carpets put in two years ago and they are already grubby. Even though I make people take off their shoes in the house! I have figured out the grub comes from the dog's paws.

Sorry but just had to share this, I hate loo brushes and would rather just put loads of bleach round the rim to drip down and clean it (which I do regularly before work anyway so it can stay there for a good few hours).

If my OH happens to be using the toilet though, he has quite a strong flow and jet washes it off

According to a couple of sources I've seen, there are more germs in the average sink plughole than in the toilet

As someone (sorry, no time to check back) has already pointed out, the vital bit to keep clean is the seat, as that's what you come into contact with.

It's probably fair to say that unless your toilet is the same state as the ones mrcow mentions (how can people live like that  ), then keeping it clean and pleasant to use is probably going to deal with the germs well enough, and again, cleaning the loo brush if you use one and making sure its out of bounds to children (until they're old enough to use it for cleaning up after themselves rather than playing with it!) is probably enough to keep it acceptably safe.

Don't forget to put vinegar/bicarb/bleach/soda crystals (depending on you preference) down those plugholes regularly though!

Indeed; taps are pretty rife too.

I keep the seat, flusher, etc germ-free, but I never really got why the bowl needs to be germ-free. It's not like we touch the inside of the bowl or lick it or anything ;) As long as it smells pretty, that's all I care about ... and when I've done my business it smells like flowers in there because I'm a girl and everything I expel is lovely.

I'd say it remove a bit of dirt, but nothing really beats a professional carpet cleaner. They have equipment you simply don't have. To remove ground in dirt, you need to shampoo the carpet and/or steam it around once every six months. It's normally possible for a professional to remove all the dirt from the carpet, and almost all stains.

I heard that cakes of soap are pretty bad too. That's why I use liquid soap when I wash my hands.
  • I think you are confusing Old Style with the Marriage and Families board which has had a few threads like that recently.

I didn't say what board it was on...:o:D

  • I don't have a carpeted loo now, but I did in my first flat (I'm female and was living on my own). I don't understand what is wrong with this

I had carpet tiles in my kitchen once that were specially made for kitchens. Is there something wrong with that as well?

I use an anti bac spray to clean cistern, seat etc and wipe with a cloth then use bleach in the bowl and scrub with a loo brush. I bleach the cloth afterwards ready for next time i clean the bathroom. Like some others the loo brush sits in the bleach for a while and also sits in bleach in its holder.

I can see why some people dont like the thought of loo brushes and reuseable cloths but i have never seen anything wrong with it. The cloth i only use for the loo and it gets disinfected after every clean. Personally id much rather clean the bowl using a brush than get right in there and scrub with toilet paper! I think i would find the closer proximity of my face and the toilet bowl worse than using a loo brush :p

He wouldn't have dared...would he? :rotfl:

The old dog was more of a problem at that time! :rotfl:
