Hello! I'm very excited. I've been Freecycle loads of stuff recently, as I'm keen to declutter my house.
Our local BBC TV are planning a week of programmes on Waste, and want to include Freecycle. They've asked me and my family to be on!
If anyone in the Hull area is interested, Look North, week commencing November 20.
I'll keep you posted.

It's a great idea, I might stick some items on there but I really fear people that will take and sell on , I wan't someone who genuinely want's the item.0

I usually wait 24 hours between posting and offering an item. I then pick who seems to have the best reason for wanting the item.
However, I'd rather someone took an item and sold it on to someone who wants it, than it clutter up my home. If I could be bothered, I'd e-bay things myself.

That is true as well, I always look for the most needy person, you can spot the dealers a mile off, I never post pictures with any of my stuff reason being if anyone needs an item that bad they are more than happy to make do, I know I am.
The dealers always say have you got any pictures etc (hmm what for use on ebay LOL) I always say no as I always post a more than accurate description.
Most who will say OH ok I will come over next week (hmm when the auction ends)
So I have become good at fishing out the Freecycle Rouges, Also your average freecycle user is always offering as well as asking so you get use to your local groups and members.
Also don't let paranoia creep in, its still better than landfill."Don't panic just chill out and smile"

roses wrote:I've used Freecycle a few times to give and receive although I am not impressed. I gave away some computer books, got flooded with emails within 1 hour, offered it to the first person who didn't even turn up at the agreed time or mail me afterwards to say sorry!
I have also attempted to get some curtains. About 5 times I have seen postings but they all go within 5 minutes. It's like there's a leech infestation and unless you jump on the offer literally the minute it's posted you won't get it!
It's like that on ours too even though they introduced a FOP - where you set a date for giving and select from all replies recieved by that date.
I see the same names receiving over and over and there's been a lot of dispute about some people selling on at the car boot sales the following week.
I've never managed to 'bag' anything I want yet (not even the chair with no seat that my daughter wanted for a school project lol), but I think a lot of people offering goods, select names they see frequently offering on the board; a sort of you've given, you deserve to receive, type of thing.
That's all well and good, but I've never offered anything, although Ive helped a lot of people out when they've requested things.
Maybe there should have a points system where each give/take is awarded a point by the taker/giver... perhaps this would highlight the grabbers, sellers, genuine freecyclers.
I don't know, this probably has its flaws too but our Freecycle isn't really working the way it stands. Or, should I say, it isn't working for me lol0 -

What I do when I Get a WANTED that I can fulfill is to post an OFFER to the board to see if anyone else may want the said item, this also filters out the "bad" WANTER who is forever peppering the board with WANTED ads without actually looking at what is on offer that may meed their need in the first place!
This also gets ones own OFFER profile up - even if you do end up gifting to the original WANTER.
A points scheme, like eBay?, is not an unreasonable thought BUT - as Owner of LutonFreecycle - who would keep it up to date as there is not method for doing this automatically on Yahoo groups.
I spend enough time moderating posts and "helping" members who have had no-shows and resolving differences.
Cheers

I said it had its flaws lol. I applaud you for moderating. I used to manage a club forum and I don't think anyone could appreciate how much work it involves until they do it for a while.
I don't visit the site very often, I get the instant email notifications. I guess that is why I tend to respond personally to posts rather than on the board.
I'll definitely take on board your suggestion of going through the forum though. At least this way, people might realise I'm not just there for the taking.

Make sure you send it using the correct email account that you are registered on the board with and make sure, as I have said, that you send it in PLAIN TEXT otherwise it will be rejected.
You should see the correct posting address on the bottom of each notification / digest that you get in your in box.
I tend to do this so that I can forward my original OFFER/WANTED as a TAKEN/RECIEVED back to the board. Also if I do not get a response from my home Freecycle board I can forward the message to all the adjacent Freecycle boards without having to re-type.
Also when I get a wanted that I can fulfill I use that as a basis for a forwarded OFFER to the group.
Regards
Matt0
